Group directions: • Read “No Speak English” in The House on Mango Street • As a group, answer the questions on the handout. • As you read and discuss in your groups, keep these questions in mind: • How and why is culture important to one’s identity? In what ways do immigrants try to preserve their cultures? What aspects of culture are most easily preserved or precious to an immigrant?
Thematic Analysis: HOMS vignettes • In your same groups, you will be given a theme and a set of vignettes to read. • You will read one of the vignettes assigned to your group, then discuss and answer the 3 questions on the slip of paper I give your group. • You will follow this plan to complete your reading of the thematic vignettes. • Your group may keep a single sheet of paper to record the answers (with all members’ names on it), but I will be monitoring that all individuals are participating. If you are not participating, you will not receive a SLV grade for this activity.
Closing Response: Thematic vignettes • In 3-5 sentences address: • How is identity affected or changed by the experiences that one has in their lifetime? Use details or examples from your reading today to support your answer.
