HURRICANE RINA FORECAST • A contingent of 82,000 tourists visiting Cancun, Cozumel, and the Maya Riviera and other locales via cruise liners and other modes of travel are at risk. • Many are beginning to evacuate these areas, some of which were damaged by Wilma.
HURRICANE RINA FORECAST • Hurricane Rina is forecast to make landfall on Thursday, October 27th. • Rina could make a sharp turn to the east and move towards Cuba and Florida, as Hurricane Wilma did in 2005.

In Cuba, preparations to evacuate four western provinces, including the Isle of Youth, were made early.In all, over 368,000 people were ordered to evacuate.
HURRICANE WILMA: CUBA • Evacuations started early. • Two million residents of Havana, Cuba sat in darkness as a result of power outages. • Neighborhoods in Havana were inundated with 1 m (3 ft) of water that reached up to four blocks inland.
HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA • Wilma, Florida’s eighth hurricane in 15 months, came ashore at 6:30 a.m. ET on October 24th near Cape Romano, 22 miles south of Naples. FL.
HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA • After landfall, Wilma raced through Florida at about 32 km/hr (20 mi/hr). • In the process, Wilma spawned FIVE tornadoes and dropped 25 cm (10 in) of rain.

HURRICANE WILMA: EARLY LOSS ESTIMATE • Risk Management Solutions estimated that insurance companies would have claims in the range of $6 billion to $10 billion for damage in Florida.
HURRICANE WILMA: LOSS ESTIMATE • RMS’ estimate was based on onshore damage resulting from wind, a coastal storm surge, business interruption, and increased costs for materials and services needed for repairs.
In Florida, a mandatory evacuation of residents was ordered for the Florida Keys.
HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA • Winds with gust of over 160 km/hr (100 mi/hr) buffeted heavily populated Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties on the Atlantic coast.
HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA • An estimated 6 million homes and businesses across the state experienced power outages.
HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA • Wilma flooded large sections of Key West, including the airport, with 1 to 1 ½ m (3 to 5 ft) water.
