Characters you want know Odysseus: Odysseus: Main Guy- Epic hero- Left his home to go fight in the Trojan war and takes him 20 years to make it back Elpenor: One of Odysseus’ men who died drunk falling off of Circe’s roof. Tiresias: Blind prophet who advises Odysseus on his future journies with specific details on cattle of the sun god Eurylochus: Member of Odysseus’ crew who persuades the men to eat the cattle Helios: God of the sun – Owner of sacred cattle on his island- complains to Zeus about the crime Zeus: King of God- sends thunder head that starts a storm down to destroy Odysseus’ ship

Land of the Dead- Key events Goes to underworld to look for Tiresias Sacrifices a black lamb and a Ewe (female sheep) to call Tiresias forward Before Tiresias appears Elpenor appears Elpenor asks Odysseus to go back and give him a proper burial and explains how he died. He took Odysseus by surprise Odysseus did not know he was dead Odysseus’ mother appears in front of him and she also surprises him because he did not know she had died. Odysseus’ has to fend off all of the spirits who are trying to get to the bloody pit of sacrifices (from the lamb’s blood)

  4. Tiresias shows up and tells him you can all make it home safe if you stick to your path and you keep yourselves in line and don’t eat the cattle of the sun god when you get there. If you don’t listen to my warning you will be lost for years before you make it home…..alone…

  5. Cattle of the Sun God- Key events Dock in a sea cave and wait for a storm to blow over. Odysseus warns them about not eating the cattle but not specific on consequences just says “or we pay dearly for it” After a month the crew has already gone through all of their food ad provisions. Odysseus walks deep into the cave to pray to the gods for their salvation. The gods put Odysseus to sleep. While Odysseus is gone Eurylochus persuades the crew to eat the cattle saying that dying at sea is more noble than dying of starvation- They agree. Upon his return Odysseus reprimanded his crew for disobeying his orders, but he did not eat the cattle Helios complains to Zeus and threatens to illuminate the underworld instead of earth if the crew is not punished. Zeus Agrees

  6. Zeus sends a thunderhead that starts a storm that destroys the ship and the crew members drown Odysseus must sail through Scylla and Charybdis on his own without a ship, but on a makeshift raft. In order to survive he holds on to the branch of a fig tree and waits for Charybdis to spit his raft out. He lands on Calypsos island where he is held captive for 7 years
