Now we’ll look at some maps that will show the expansion of the United States westward.
United States, 1800 As this map shows, around 1800 there was still a lot of British control in certain areas of North America.
United States, 1830 • As you can see, the United States now has control over some territories England once had in 1800.
United States, 1848 The Mexican War added many states to the Union. Notice also the fact that the states are now divided between free and slave.
United States Map, 1860 This is a map of the presidential election of 1860. California and Oregon are now in the Union. Notice also that Lincoln did not carry a single slave state even though he won the election.
Notes for instructor Lincoln is the most important figure in the 1800s. Be sure to mention the importance of John C. Calhoun to the southern cause. The Civil War was over slavery but states’ rights was a major factor as well. Ask students to think analytically about the maps.
