  1. Value Added Met Services Provided To ATC In The UK WMO Workshop, Toulouse, September 2005 Doug Johnson Hd of Civil Aviation Programme, Met Office, UK

  2. What is provided in ATC Operation Centres • PC Stand Alone System (MIST) • Standard Annex 3 products • Animated Weather Radar • Lightning observations • Animated gridded upper winds • Satellite pictures • Animated Mesoscale precip and cloud predictions • Web based system • Replaces stand alone system • Value added products • Nowcasting products • Towering convection • Probabilistic forecasts of visibility • Runway head and cross wind forecasts • Animated Lightning risk forecasts

  3. Towering Convection Forecasts

  4. Runway Head and Crosswind Forecasts

  5. Probabilistic Visibility Forecasts

  6. Other Value Added Services Available to ATC • Forecasts of Outcomes rather than met parameters • North Atlantic Optimum Routes (NAT Tracks) • Hold over times for de-icing fluids • Scaleable Vector Graphic (SVG) Products • Allows products to be viewed by any Internet browser • Allows zooming and panning on the web • Allows multiple overlays of products • Fully user interactive • Graphical “TAFs” • 5 to 10 day warnings of adverse weather

  7. Upper Wind and Jet Stream Forecast

  8. North Atlantic Optimum Route forecasts

  9. The current de-icing forecast service (web) Temperature for the next 24 hrs (intervened) Weather type for the next 24 hrs – with confidence (intervened) Traffic light risk of icing (auto generated)

  10. The current de-icing forecast service (web) Holdover times for next 24 hrs (auto generated from published tables) Traffic light 5-day outlook (ECMWF ensemble)

  11. GrafTaf

  12. SVG Sig Wx charts

  13. SVG Observation Overlays

  14. SVG Model Forecast Parameters

  15. SVG Airport State Charts

  16. Collaborative Decision Making • Teleconferences during times of adverse weather between: • NATS • EUROCONTROL • British Airways • Met Office • To be extended in the near future to be done on a daily basis

  17. Future Services • Upper wind forecasts for accurate transit time predictions through UK airspace • Maximise airspace capacity • Nowcasting of wind and temperature profiles in the terminal area • Minimise aircraft spacing on approach • Maximise airport capacity • Wake vortex prediction • Minimise aircraft spacing on approach • Integrate met forecasts/observations on ATC radar displays • Improved decision making by ATC • Minimise weather related delays • Fully integrated collaborative decision making • Automatic integration of electronic forecast data • Minimise weather related delays ATC MUST BE FULLY INVOVLED IN DEVELOPING THE USER REQUIREMENT. MET CAN NOT DO IT ALONE
