For 100… This type of light bulb uses 75% less energy than a standard incandescent, but contains mercury, so it needs to be disposed of properly at the building manager’s office.
For 200… This is one of the two ways listed in the Sustainable PRISE handout to keep your room cool during the summer.
What is closing your blinds. If your window gets direct sunlight, it can cause solar heat build up during the day. Keeping your blinds closed when you’re not there helps prevent the room getting hot when you don’t want it to. OR What is turning off your fan when you’re not in the room. Fans don’t create cool air- they just circulate whatever air you have. It’s the act of having air brush past your skin that causes the cooling effect. Meanwhile, the motor of your fan can warm the air around it while it’s on.
For 300… The percentage of energy saved by recycling an aluminum can when compared to producing a can from new aluminum (+/– 10%).
What is 95%? Producing an aluminum can from recycled aluminum uses only 5% of the energy needed to produce an aluminum can from new aluminum.
For 400… This is the name of the Harvard wide bike sharing program, set up by the Environmental Action Committee this last year. .
What is VeriFast bikes? During the School year, you can check out a VeriFast bike from the Mather or Cabot building managers.
For 500… This Freshman Dorm is going to be the first Harvard Dorm to receive Green Building Certification.
What is Thayer Hall? Thayer is going to be the first Harvard Dorm to receive a LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a widely recognized and respected certification for buildings that meet high environmental standards. Some environmental features of Thayer: Dual Flush Toilets, Low flow showerheads, custodial staff uses green cleaning supplies, common room furniture made from rapidly renewable resources (i.e. bamboo), organic landscaping on surrounding lawn, energy efficient hand driers instead of paper towels.
For 100… …the single most important thing you can do in most labs at Harvard to reduce energy use
A fume hood left open for a year wastes >$5,000 more energy relative to a fume hood left closed.
For 200… Name a current or former PRISE fellow who is a “lab sustainability rep” (a lab researcher paid to share best practices between labs at FAS).
Judy Fan • Peyton Shieh • Iris Odstrcil • (Partial credit for Luc Weiss, REP rep)
For 300… the organization that helps labs reduce waste by facilitating donation of clean, working equipment and supplies to needy labs in the developing world
For 400… the listserv you can join to learn how to make your lab more environmentally sustainable and to donate no longer needed equipment and chemicals or find out when other labs are donating equipment or supplies
Daily Double!!
DAILY DOUBLE these are 2 reasons that micro-scaling your reactions can be beneficial.
A few reasons to reduce chemical use: • Less energy wasted upstream • Lower costs • Lower potential for serious accidents • Less time to complete processes • Less plastic waste • Less hazardous chemical waste • Less energy wasted downstream
For 100… MIT scientists have used this group of autotrophic organisms to sequester CO2 released from their campus power plants, resulting in up to an 80% reduction in emissions and free biofuel.
For 200… The technology providing the largest amount of renewable energy worldwide, at the end of 2008.
For 200… What is Hydropower.
For 300… Highly regarded as the next big breakthrough in energy efficient lighting, this is what LED stands for.
What is a Light Emitting Diode. LED’s use about 5% of the energy needed for an incandescent, and while they are widely used in many areas such as car lights, there is still a little bit of work to do before they can easily be put into homes.
For 400… According to energy secretary Steven Chu, this is the first thing we should address to tackle our energy problems.
What is building efficiency. Buildings account for 80% of the U.S’ energy consumption. Chu believes that we can improve building efficiency by as much as 40%.

What is Mt Pinatubo. …proponents of “geo-engineering” solutions to climate change propose lofting the same amount of sulfur aerosols into the stratosphere as were released from Pinatubo, up to once per year. Opponents of this technique cite ozone depletion, drought, and unanticipated ecosystem impacts as potential problems
For 200… The email address to which you should address any suggestions related to energy and sustainability at FAS
What is energy@fas. Emails to this address go to the FAS Energy and Sustainability Team, and get forwarded to building managers and decision makers across campus. At HMS, you can email sustainability@hms.
