2007 2006 June Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies 2008 2010 2011 2009
Average monthly surface temperatures (3 m depth) off the Columbia River 1998-2011.
Catches of sardines in 2011 in surface trawl during daytime tows and surface temperature.
Length frequency of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) captured off Oregon/Washington in May, June, and Sept 2011 during BPA plume study.
Length-frequency of Pacific sardine captured during September 2006 – 2011 off the Oregon/Washington coast during the BPA plume study. Only 3 caught in September 2010
Length frequency of Pacific sardine captured off the Columbia River August 2010
Primary findings in 2011 • The ocean was relatively cold in spring/early summer 2011 – La Nina and cold PDO • Ocean conditions appeared poor for successful spawning /recruitment off OR/WA in 2011 – No 0-age sardines were observed in September 2011. • We were unable to estimate the sardine population abundance off the Columbia River because of reduced night time surface trawling sampling efforts. • Most sardines caught in 2011 were large/older individuals –2009 year-class is around but nearshore.
