What are Standards? Establish specifications and procedures designed to ensure reliability Form the fundamental building blocks for product development
Why are Standards Important? Consistency Compatibility Simplifies product Development Compare Competing products Interconnectivity and interoperability
Mil Standard Establishes general design criteria for military systems Using human design criteria and principles to achieve mission success Applicable to all systems, facilities and equipment
Physical Accommodations System equipment should cover the full size range of personnel Adequate strength, endurance, and reach to complete job related functions Designs should accommodate applicable joint-service and foreign military personnel
Physical Accommodation cont. Adjustable equipment should accommodate the range of personnel. Designs should not exclude more than 5% of the population Design criteria for specific jobs can be utilized Designers can utilize new equipment and technology to collect new anthropometric data
Strength Requirements Body size/measurements should not be used to define accommodation for strength and endurance Strength requirements of a task should accommodate the weakest users Break strength should not be less than the strongest user
Strength cont. The least stringent physical qualification for a specialty occupation should be used when designing for force limits.
Fail Safe Design A fail safe design shall be provided when equipment or users are at risk Designs limited by health and safety will take precedence over performance Operate, Maintain Repair in operational environment Designs should be simple
Controls and Displays Relationship of controls and associated displays should be apparent Designs should feature proximity, similarity of grouping, framing… Complexity/precision of controls should be consistent with the system Display vibration
Controls and Displays cont Separated control and displays should be adjacent to each other Emergency displays should be seen and reached without delay Feedback should be provided without lag
Vibration Vehicles on both land, sea and air should limit whole body vibrations Vehicle seats should be designed to reduce whole body vibration Vibrations below 20 Hz should be avoided
The End But design standards do!
