Design criteria • Short – c 20-30 pages • Structured around the four framework priorities, changing the way we live our lives, and delivery • Applying the framework guiding principles • Focused on priority outcomes • that matter – by having a direct impact or displaying leadership • that we can make a difference to • that aren’t happening anyway • Developed through both internal and external debate, proceeding in parallel and informing each another • Not the end of the story – a milestone and a route map SSDS 2005 - Advisory Group, 24 March 2005

SDD working with Scottish Commissioners, CSCSS externals and others to develop proposals for a limited number of key, long-term outcomes which the Scottish Strategy will help to deliver For consideration at the Advisory Group in April and CSCSS in May SSDS 2005 - Advisory Group, 24 March 2005

  5. Sustainable consumption & production • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Green jobs and business resource efficiency Green Jobs Strategy in hand. What more? • Food Debate needed between agriculture, ELL, health, procurement, education etc • Waste Where next? • Sustainable procurement Part of delivery – leading by example • Sustainable consumption Relationship with UK Govt? Climate change and energy • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Climate change review • Renewables What more is there to say than what we are already doing? • Energy efficiency Strategy in hand. Important part of the story – what more? • National transport strategy Distinct exercise but need to ensure SD is fully reflected • Built environment Lots going on – building standards, construction skills, architecture, planning, social housing, school building … Is it enough? Natural resource protection & environmental enhancement • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Environmental protection Environment Group reviewing contribution • Health and environment Health-department led project on interactions between health and environment policies • Environmental inequalities Enforcement, cleaning up more degraded environments, improving information and engagement • Biodiversity Taking forward the Biodiversity Strategy Implementation Plans SSDS 2005 - Advisory Group, 24 March 2005

Sustainable communities • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Reform of the planning system Under way – Development Department lead • Sustainable regeneration Housing quality, fuel poverty, greenspace, litter, graffiti and antisocial behaviour. SDD working with Development Department, Communities Scotland and others • Environmental Justice Building on the EJ action programme review - tackling environmental inequalities and giving people and communities information and power to influence decisions about their environment SSDS 2005 - Advisory Group, 24 March 2005

Changing the way we live our lives • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Education for sustainable development Need to accelerate and build on existing programme of work • Communication strategy Building on DALCAL, research needed on effective ways of communicating, building awareness and engagement and translating this into action • Community engagement and capacity building Review existing work and consider whether more action and/or coordination needed. Delivery • What key changes do we want to see as a result of the Strategy? • Leading by example Sustainable procurement, capital investment strategies, greening public sector operations, local government and best value • Governance Reporting and auditing Roles of SDC and SSDF Internal arrangements – CSCSS, Advisory Group, SDD Processes and systems – training, PEAs, spending reviews … • Indicators Open debate to gather ideas and assemble information.
