Origins • The hippie is deprived from the “beatnik” of the beat generation. Which were the articulate culture of the 1950’s criticized for they’re lifestyles. • However if you were born in the 1950’s you would soon become part of the Hippie Generation.
What does it mean to be a Hippie? • Devotion: Hippies are committed to whatever they’re fighting for or against whether it be abstaining from war or legalizing pot. • Values: Hippies need to keep a very open mind to everything. Whether it be a difference of religion to sexuality. Hippies need to be willing to try everything once.
Influences • Drugs: In the 1960’s more people started experimenting with drugs from marijuana to LSD to “broaden they’re minds”. • Music: The 60’s also introduced new forms of expression in the form of music.
Music • New forms of music came with the hippie generation. • Psychedelic Rock: Such famous artists as Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead perfected the art of powerful lyrics and long instrumentals. • Folk: Such performers as Creedence Clearwater Revival and Bob Dylan used acoustic guitars to create a strong moving message in each of they’re songs.
How To Spot A Hippie? • Old • Usually a beard very rarely seen clean shaven. • Wears a lot of tye-dye. • Can be bald or have long hair. • Unemployment Line
Famous Hippies • John Lennon: After separating from the Beatles John continued his career focusing on spreading peace and love with songs like “Imagine” and “Give Peace A Chance” • Stewart Brand: Produced the “Whole Earth Catalog” which acted as the guide book for the Hippie subculture.
How Hippie’s Changed The World • Hippies changed the world by teaching us to be more tolerant of other peoples philosophies and culture. • They’ve also taught us to fight for what we believe in.
