The PTA Can Help Our Students Read to Succeed! "School libraries help teachers teach and children learn. Children and teachers need library resources--especially books--and the expertise of a librarian to succeed. Books, information technology and school librarians who are part of the schools' professional team are basic ingredients for student achievement." Presented by School Librarians: Bonnie Magagna, Jillian Mandelkern, and Jesse Lumsden
Objectives • Necessary to improve History of Europe section in the high school media center to supplement multiple curriculum needs • Holocaust study in English 10 and World History 10 • World War I study in English 12 • World War I and II study across History classes • Requesting $800 to purchase books, DVDs, and a magazine subscription that will enhance collection • Additions will provide more current materials that are better suited for student research • Teachers need materials that will enrich instruction
Current Status of History of Europe Collection ( Dewey Classification 940-949)
Consider the Research Pennsylvania middle schools with the best PSSA reading scores spend twice as much on their school libraries as the lowest scoring schools. (Lance) Scores on standardized reading and English tests in the schools included in one study tended to increase when libraries in the schools had newer books, and were open and staffed more hours during the school week. Meeting PDE School Library Program Standards The size of the library staff and collection matter. The more resources available to the students, the higher they score on standardized tests. Your investment = academic achievement
