Windan interplanetary physics laboratory • new science campaigns • unique science & accomplishments • orbit & instrument status • Wind data usage & availability Presentation to the Senior Review June 11, 2003 Stuart Bale (UCB), Keith Ogilvie (GSFC), Mike Desch (GSFC) on behalf of the Wind team…
Wind Science Campaigns Ideas! Five primary science campaigns
Wind unique capabilities • Wind/WAVES is the only radio astronomy experiment to ‘see’ from 2 Rs to 1 AU • Wind/3DP makes the most sensitive (3D!) electron measurements from 40 keV to 400 keV • Wind/SWE and 3DP together provide the only complement of 3D, thermal-to-MeV particle measurements Wind accomplishments • > 800 publications through 2002 • PhDs/student publications • Recent Wind science results: • 24 Jan '98 IP Shock Event • 1 Apr 1999 Reconnection Event
Interacting Coronal Mass Ejections • the interaction of fast and slow CMEs produces strong electron acceleration type II burst of fast CME Plasma radio emission at interaction time
Reconnection in the tail 1 April, 1999 events (Oieroset et al., Nature, PRL) • Wind observes: • energized electrons • flows, fields, and LH waves • electron solitary waves
Wind orbit: 2002 - 2004 6 orbital phases culminating at L1 …remaining fuel allows Wind to function at L1 for at least a decade
Wind data products and availability In addition to KP data, Wind experimenters have made high-resolution, well-calibrated data available to the community Wind Key Parameter data is the most frequently requested at CDAWeb 220 Wind KP data products available online…
