The insulation materials contain trapped air. Trapped air is a very good insulator, because it does not transfer heat well by either conduction or convection. Dave should compare the costs of buying and putting in the three materials. Then he should find out how much cheaper his heating bills would be every year for each material. Then he can work out the payback times, and choose the shortest.
