The Beginning • The Arab Spring started in December of 2010 when protests began in Tunisia after Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire because of the government taking away his living as a street vendor.After this incident, protests started in Tunisia and Algeria.
Events of 2011 • In January, Protests started in Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Syria and Morocco. The Tunisian government was overthrown the same month. • In February, protests against Muammar Gaddafi and his regime started the uprising which would eventually become the Civil War in Libya.
2011 Continued • In June, Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh was injured from a failed assassination attempt. • In August, The Battle of Tripoli started in Libya, in which the rebels gained control of Tripoli overthrowing Gaddafi’s government.
2011 Continued • In November, Gaddafi’s son was captured after he was hiding in Nigeria. Protests began in Cairo demanding a more civilian government. • In December, Egyptian women protested against Human Rights violations.
Events in 2012 • In February, the Syrian government attacked the city of Homs. Ali Abdullah Saleh resigned from his presidency. • In May, the Syrian government carried out a massacre in Houla. • In July the Syrian government carried out a massacre in Tremseh. • In November, Egyptians protested against Mohammed Morsi after he granted himself unlimited powers to protect the nation.
Events in 2013 • In February, Syrian rebels started an offensive on Damascus. The UN says the death toll of the civil war in Syria is over 70,000. • In June, Syrian government forces take Al-Qusayr from rebel forces. • In July, Mohammed Morsi is deposed as president of Egypt.
Events in 2014 • In February, the Egyptian government resigns, which lets Military Chief Sisi run for president. • In May, Syrian rebels withdraw from the siege of Homs.
