Read AloudGenre: Autobiographical Narrative As you listen to today’s read-aloud, listen for the parts of an autobiography: • the author shares her own life story or experiences. • the author writes in the first- person voice, referring to herself as “I”. When you listen to an autobiographical selection, you should listen to learn about the author’s personal experience. One purpose for listening is learn about the author’s first friend.

  3. Fluency Good readers read aloud with appropriate speed so that listeners can easily follow the flow of Information in the text. Listen as I read the following story aloud:

  4. Compare and Contrast Good readers recognize comparisons and contrasts in text. The text may compare and contrast characters, settings, and events.

  6. Comprehension Strategy: When you are trying to answer a question, you should think about the kind of information the question is asking for and know where to look to find the answer. When you do this, you are using the QAR, or Question Answer Relationship strategy. There are 4 kinds of question answer relationships: Right There On Your Own Think and Search Author and You

  7. Background The main character in the our story makes a long journey from China to begin a new life in America. Coming to live in another country after leaving one’s home country is called Immigrating, and a person who does this is an immigrant.

  8. Vocabulary  Let’s look at our vocabulary words for the week 

  9. averted If you averted your eyes, you looked away from something instead of directly at it. Why have you adverted your eyes from the sun?

  10. fury Fury is extremely strong anger. What might be some signs of a baby’s fury?

  11. interrogation An interrogation is a long period of intense questioning to get information from someone. What do police officers do during the interrogation of a suspect?

  12. stern Someone who is stern is very serious and strict. What action is likely to cause a parent to have a stern look?

  13. accusing When you look at someone in an accusing way, you are showing that you think he or she has done something wrong. If someone is accusing you of eating the last plum, does the person think that you did or did not eat the plum?

  14. solemnly When you say something solemnly, you say it in a very serious way. What is the difference between behaving in a rowdy way and behaving solemnly?

  15. cringed If you cringed, you moved or flinched slightly because of discomfort or fear. Which sound would make you cringe, fingernails scraping on a chalkboard, or someone singing a beautiful song?

  16. craned If you craned your neck, you stretched it to you see or hear something better. When might have you craned your neck?
