  1. Building Better Opportunities • The National Lottery Community Fund • 18 September 2019

  2. The National Lottery Community Fund The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest community funder in the UK. Last year we distributed £700m to 12,000 projects, using money raised by National Lottery players. Most of our grants go to local charities, often run by volunteers – and whether the grant is for £500, or £5m, our funding is used by communities across the UK to support amazing projects led by local people.

  3. Building Better Opportunties -The context • Unemployed people often experience multiple disadvantages • Increasing unemployment hidden from the system • Fragmented support • Most support focussed on younger-people • Lack of one-on-one focus in large initiatives • Payment by results – can encourages adverse behaviour

  4. Building Better Opportunities • Why we supported BBO • Ability to double the impact of ESF funds. • VSCE struggling to access EU funds despite being best placed to support project beneficiaries. • Projects being delivered according to local priorities set by the LEPs themselves. • Wide range of activities

  5. Building Better Opportunities • Successes to date across England…. • Over 75,000 participants • 76% of the 2,000 partners are VCSE • Payment model: organisations can support people with multiple disadvantage • Enables intensive support to participants

  6. Lessons learned • Key findings: • Expanded local partnerships • Dealing with administration requirements • Engagement of participants • Tailored holistic support • Outcomes • Wider benefits

  7. Coventry & Warwickshire • Awarded c£7m (plus additional £7m extension funding) • Supported 3 projects: • Breakthrough - BRANCAB • Accelerate – Coventry & Warwickshire CDA • Progress - Groundwork UK
