  2. People that watched the 1960 presidential debate on TV felt that John F. Kennedy won.

  3. The communist leader of Cuba that came to power in 1959 was Fidel Castro.

  4. The Bay of Pigs invasion is when the US aided rebels to invade Cuba.

  5. The US “quarantined” Cuba during the Cuban Missile crisis

  6. To prevent citizens from fleeing to Democratic nations, the Soviets built the Berlin Wall

  7. The first man in space was Yuri Gagarin.

  8. When he came into office John Kennedy was concerned with the Cold War.

  9. The Area Redevelopment Act dealt with poverty in America.

  10. The Alliance for Progress provided economic aid to Latin American nations

  11. The Peace Corps sends people to poor areas in Africa, Latin America and Asia to help the poor.

  12. According to the Warren report, John Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.

  13. Following John Kennedy’s assassination, the “mood of the country” supported many of Johnson’s programs.

  14. Johnson’s Great Society was a plan for domestic improvements, including educational and social reforms

  15. The Vietnam War financially hindered Johnson’s Great Society.

  16. As a result of the Immigration Act of 1965, more people came in to the US from the Western Hemisphere.

  17. Head Start was the Great Society program that helped with education for pre-school children.

  18. Medicare was the Great Society program that helped with medical care for the elderly.

  19. Medicaid was the Great Society program that helped with medical care for those that could not afford care .

  20. Due to the possibility of nuclear war many baby boomers felt threatened.

  21. The Establishment referred to those in authority- the older generation, the government, teachers, etc.

  22. The counterculture support sharing.

  23. Counterculture diet emphasized less red meat.

  24. During the sixties the Counterculture influenced men's clothing by making it more colorful.

  25. Elvis Presley linked Black R & B to White Rock and Roll.

  26. In 1968 rioting in America occurred after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.

  27. James Earl Ray was found guilty of assassinating Martin Luther King, Jr.

  28. Problems of northern cities included- • Overcrowding • Poverty • Discrimination

  29. Hubert Humphrey was the Democratic candidate who was for continuing the war in Vietnam.

  30. Lyndon Johnson attempted to help Humphrey by halting bombing of North Vietnam in October 1968.

  31. Eugene McCarthy was the Democratic candidate that was opposed to the war in Vietnam.

  32. At the 1968 Chicago convention, protestors were angry because Hubert Humphrey supported the war in Vietnam.

  33. The “negative” aspect of Robert Kennedy was that he may have been too liberal.

  34. Sirhan Sirhan killed Robert Kennedy.

  35. George Wallace was an extremely conservative politician.

  36. Richard Nixon ran as a law and order candidate and won the 1968 Presidential race.

  37. Due to the feminist movement, some women waited to marry until they began their careers.

  38. Women were influenced by messages of equality from the Civil Rights Movement

  39. Equal Pay Act of 1963 stated people employed in the same position should receive equal pay.

  40. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned gender discrimination when hiring.

  41. The birth control pill was approved in 1960.

  42. NOW worked for gender equality.

  43. Ella Grasso was the first female elected governor (Connecticut).

  44. Janet Gray Hayes was the first female elected mayor (San Jose, California).

  45. Phyllis Schafly is a Conservative women, opposed to NOW and ERA.

  46. The Wage Gap for salaries by gender is less now than it was in the 1960s.

  47. Brown v. Board overturned legal segregation.

  48. Gideon v. Wainwright established the right to have a lawyer even if you can not afford one.

  49. Baker v. Carr established federal authority to reapportion voting districts.

  50. Abington v. Schempp banned bible reading and other religious exercises in public schools.
