  4. Mecca 570 AD Muhammad was born into a poor clan of the ruling class. Made a living as a caravan trader. At 40 Angel Jibreel told Muhammad of his prophet status, God or Allah, and revealed what he needed to recite. More revelations came in the years that followed. Merchants that traveled to Mecca feared Muhammad’s idea of one god. Muhammad moved from Mecca to Yathrib, the journey is known as hijrah, Yathrib becomes known as Medina. In the years that followed many Arabs embraced his teachings, and Islam has spread globally since. Prophet Muhammad

Faith of Islam • Belief that there is only one god, and the follower must follow god’s will. • Known as Muslims. • Holy Book: Qur’an: it is the word of god as revealed to Muhammad. • Worship in Mosques • 5 Pillars: Profession of Faith, 5 daily Prayers, Paying Zakat, Fasting during Ramadan, Making at least one pilgrimage to Mecca

  7. Homework • Do all Ch. 11, Section 1 reading checks • Each answer should be 2 substantial paragraphs. • Do the Arabian Peninsula Map on page 240 • Do all three skills assessment questions • Due on Thursday.
