  1. The Deified Augustus September 63 BC – 19 August 14 AD "If I have played my part well, clap your hands, and dismiss me with applause from the stage."

  2. The Graceful Emperor • Octavian was considered to be the greatest of all Roman emperors. He was fair, and gracious. • He was very short in stature, and a little hefty. • He suffered from perpetual dental issues, and had red, itchy spots covering his body from fungal infections. • He had a gambling problem, and would often loan friends money for them to gamble against him. • As a young man, he was given the honor of Pontifex Maximus.

  3. What Happened After Julius`s Death? • Octavian (Augustus) inherited Caesar`s power after he marched on Rome in 43 B.C. • With Aemelius Lepidus, and Marcus Antonius the Second Triumvirate was formed, despite Antony`s past infamy. • The three pursued the assassins of Caesar. (Battle of Philippi.) • Proscription of over 100 Senators including Cicero.

  4. Personal Life • In 39 B.C. , Octavian takes as his wife Scribonia. By her, his first daughter, Julia is born. He divorces her a year later and then marries Livia Drusilla in 38 B.C. • Octavian banishes both his daughter, and granddaughter because they broke his trust and his morals. • Most of his heirs mysteriously die… except for Tiberius.

  5. Relationships Fall Apart • Lepidus felt left out, and faded away in Africa. • In 32 B.C. , Antony took Cleopatra as his wife. This broke Octavian`s moral code, and he denied Antony`s rights to be a true Roman Citizen. Octavian read Antony`s will aloud to the senate….. • The Senate Declared War • Battle of Actium September 2nd, 31 B.C. • Conquering of Egypt 30 B.C.

  6. Master of The Roman World • With no further contenders, Octavian decides to make some reforms, starting with the end of the Republic, and the beginning of the Empire. (What year?) He received the name “Augustus”, and princeps. • He put to death Antony`s and Cleopatra`s son, Caesarion. • He tread very carefully in the senate house so he would not make the same mistake as is Great Uncle, Julius.

  7. Reforms • Restored over 82 temples in just one year • Fortified the Northern Border of the Empire • Heavily restricted marriage and divorce laws.. • Re-organized the Army, and posted it out of the city into the provinces. • Remodeled Civil Service, and created a team of 3,500 firemen • “Relinquished” his own power to the Senate which he had reduced in number. • Created the Praetorian Guard (9000 soldiers)

  8. The Deity Dies • With Tiberius as his only heir, Augustus makes a trip to Capri to bring him back from exile in A.D. 14. • On the way, he fell very ill, and perished on the island of Nola. • His body was brought back to Rome, where a funeral pyre was burned in the streets. The people mourned for years. • His body was placed in his own Mausoleum. He was only a few months short of his 76th birthday.
