Upbringing • Born into an equestrian family on September 23 in 63 BC • His original name was Gaius Octavius • When young, he was cruel but became mild later on • Was tolerant of criticism, and had a good sense of humor • He was of short stature, handsome and well proportioned, but suffered from bad teeth and feeble health Augustus as a child
Relationship to Julius Caesar • His father tragically died when Octavius was the age of 4 • Adopted by his Uncle, the famous Julius Caesar • Octavius was expected to be the next dictator of Rome Julius Caesar
Start of His Ruling • In 44 BC he learned that his uncle had been assassinated • He was 18 and a student at Apollonia • Caesar named Octavius as his successor • He hurries back to Rome even though his friends and family beg him to stay • Becomes the first emperor of Rome Assassination of Julius Caesar
Early Ruling • Pays for games in honor of Caesar • Raises an army of 3000 men • Gained an early opponent…Mark Antony • Their armies met near Modena in 43 BC • Octavius wins and negotiates terms with Antony Mark Antony

Conflict Between Augustus and Antony • Octavius and Antony separate • Octavius controls the western territories • Antony moves to the east • In 40 BC, Antony marries Octavius’ sister, Octavia • Antony also marries Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt • This marriage is illegal in Rome, because Cleopatra is not a Roman citizen • This ends the alliance between Octavius and Antony Cleopatra
Their Conflict • In 31 BC, the Battle of Actium occurs • Octavius wins • Antony and Cleopatra flee to Egypt • In 30 BC, Octavius chases them • They both commit suicide • This event secures Egypt as a Roman province Roman Empire under Augustus
Rome under Augustus • In 27 BC, he gives up all of his military powers • Is granted a 10 year command over Spain, Gaul, and Syria by the Senate • 27 BC is said to be the founding year of the Roman Empire • The senate gives Octavius the title of Augustus • This all leads to many years of peace in Rome Roman Augustus Coin
40 Years of Peace in Rome • Experience an increase in prosperity and trade • The empire becomes stabilized and properly defended • Army recruits sign on for 16 years • Later increased to 20 years • Improved roads to make it easier to keep in touch with the Roman world and to move troops • New towns are built with Roman design Typical Roman Town Typical Roman Road
Roman Growth • By 14 BC, the Roman Empire extends beyond the Alps into Germany • In 9 AD, a German chief destroys the three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest • The Romans pull back • This is the first boundary that the Roman Empire experienced • To the north they are the Rhine and the Dunabe Rivers The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest The Alps

Augustus’ Legacy Accomplishments • Extended the highway system connecting all of Rome • Developed an efficient postal service • Fostered free trade among the provinces • Built many bridges, aqueducts, and buildings • The empire expanded through Spain, Gaul (now France), Panonia and Dalmatia (parts of Hungary and Croatia), Egypt and most of southwestern Europe up to the Danube River Aqueducts
