Needs of Living Things Last lesson we looked the difference between what we need and what we want or would like to have. Today we will be looking at food.
Needs of Living Things We eat all kind of food, some good, some not so good. Regardless of the type of food we eat, we all need food to survive.
Needs of Living Things Other animals also need food to survive, but their food is different to ours. Just think of the type of food a pet eats, like a cat, dog or even a goldfish. Would you eat goldfish flakes for dinner? Lets look at the food some of the Australian animals in our class book eat.
Needs of Living Things A koala only eats different types of eucalypt (gum) leaves.
Needs of Living Things A bandicoot eats all kinds of insects and worms.
Needs of Living Things A rainbow lorikeet eats nectar from flowers, and native seeds.
Needs of Living Things Squirrel Gliders also eat nectar, but they love a dinner of delicious tree sap.
Needs of Living Things An echidna, like the koala, has a very specialised diet. It only eats ants.
Needs of Living Things So you see, all animals need food. In fact all living things need food, including plants. Plants are able to make their own food using minerals and water from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the air, through a process called photosynthesis.
Needs of Living Things BOOKWORK TIME Can you cut out the different types of food and match them to each animal? Glue each one to the animal’s page, but be very careful with your glue, you don’t want to stick the pages of your book together. When you have finished that task, you can draw a picture of yourself and your own favourite food on the back page.
