Current and Future Activities at the Community Grids LaboratoryMay 12 2004 Geoffrey Fox Community Grids Lab Indiana University gcf@indiana.edu
Staffing Level • Currently 19 PhD students, 7 Researchers (2 temporary), 1 Systems • By December 2004, 4 Students will graduate and 2 researchers will leave • By June 2005, 3 more students will graduate and 2 more researchers will leave. • Expected June 2005: 13 PhD Students, 3 Researchers and 1 Systems • Will give some temporary positions for graduating students over next 12 months • “Lean and Mean”
Finished Projects • HPJava: data parallel Java compiler available at http://www.hpjava.org: team will leave by end of summer • Gateway: DoD Computing Portal • Origins of SERVOGrid • OKC (Online Knowledge Center): DoD • Information portal – our first use of Jetspeed • Funded much of work now in SERVOGrid and OGCE NMI
Mature Active Projects • SERVOGrid: Grid for Earthquake Science • DoE Fusion Grid: Collaborative “Legacy application” Visualization (IDL) • NMI OGCE (Open Grid Computing Environment) Portal • NaradaBrokering Grid and Web Service Messaging and Publish/Subscribe Environment • SOAP Handler or Proxy, GridFTP(PTCP), WSRM, Notification, P2P server free version, GridTorrent, Virtual Private Grid • GlobalMMCS Web Service Collaboration Environment • A/V plus PPT, OpenOffice, SVG; Scales to large number of users • Video Shared Display; Firewall penetration via NaradaBrokering • Lots of requests for features (improve JMF on Macintosh) • Access Grid Distance Education Classes to Jackson State University • Spring (e-Science) and Fall 2004 (computational science)

Somewhat Suspended Project • Carousel PDA and Cell phone Grid and collaboration environments • WSRM Optimized for cell phone connections • Demonstrate multi-point conferencing • Low quality 3G Rollout in USA • Asia and Europe opportunities
New/Emerging Projects • Advanced Grid Technology Projects • UK OMII • Semantic Grid/meta-data • Stream Handling and workflow (Video over IP) • A new more popular book on Grids • iSERVO • International Earthquake Grid • GISGrid with openGIS and POLIS • Grid Services for Geographical Information Systems • Nuclear/BioterrorismGrid: Los Alamos/DHS • MMVC Message-based Model-View-Control for desktop applications • GlueX experiment at Jefferson Laboratory • Grids for complex physics analysis
Exploratory Projects • Linux Desktop • Likely to get more popular – especially in Asia • Exploit MMVC • Grid Text Book • Education Grid of Grids • Collaboration with Informatics • Waiting for expected NSF solicitation • Health Informatics with Navajo Nation • Interest from IUPUI Informatics • Undergroundfilm.org Film maker Community Site • Media collaboration/distribution; TivoGrid • Biocomplexity/Bioinformatics • Uncertain due to new hires • Not clear “ready” for sophisticated computing
