Mentoring Myths • Person being mentored is the only one who benefits • Best Mentors are those who are set out to be mentors • Should be 5 – 10 years older • A rare experience and only occurs for a few great people • A full-time job – a lot of time and effort • Only happens one-on-one, long-term, face-to-face basis
What is a Mentor? • A coach • A cheerleader • Motivation • To observe and share resources • Asks questions "To the world you may just be somebody. But to somebody, you may just be the world." ~ Anonymous
Mentees How should I go about finding a mentor? • Start with a self-assessment • Develop a career plan • Observe other co-workers • Join organizations • Be open to constructive criticism • Be self motivated
But, what exactly is a mentors role? • Pay attention to your communication skills. • Mentors are there for guidance • Be easily accessible. • Provide feedback • Trust and confidentiality • Share stories, including mistakes • SHARE YOR EXPERIENCES!!
What is the mentee’s role? • You are in command • Establish priority issues for action and support • Solicit feedback • Come prepared to each meeting
