Community Resilience Activity Hastings Local Strategic Partnership 25 April 2016
A glass half-full: How an asset approach can improve community health and well-being
ESBT Community Resilience Programme Aims to improve the health of local people through growing stronger and more resilient communities Transforming how we work with communities system-wide Bringing together and building on existing local asset based approaches Learning from research and experience elsewhere
Mobilising Assets in East Sussex Chances for Change East Sussex Capturing what’s good about local communities Identifying individuals and developing opportunities More people, more involved, more often
Mobilising Assets in East Sussex Building Stronger Bridges Developing Good Neighbours in East Sussex Growing informal support in local communities Harnessing local knowledge , enthusiasm and assets Creating inclusive communities
Evidence Crucial for health and wellbeing Social capital critical for active communities to take action on the issues they feel are important
Community Assets Awareness that strong communities are built by recognising, celebrating and harnessing the ‘community assets’ that are already there.
But how? Much interest in the concept of strong communities Less consensus about the factors which create or sustain them or of the interventions which build community strength. for future activity
Engagement Activity Find out what works in local communities Understand better the factors which enable or impede community action
Key Areas of Enquiry • Thinking about your work in the community, what difference are you making and what are you most proud of? • What could help you to do more of the work you think is important (or do it better)? • What are your dreams and ambitions for your community or the community you work in? • What are the most important messages for all those involved with communities (communities themselves, organisations, businesses, and those planning ways of supporting communities)
Why are we all here? • A key part of East Sussex Better Together is an initiative to increase community resilience by building stronger communities. • Strong communities are good for the health and wellbeing of their members and help protect them against things that may be bad for their health. • The East Sussex CVS Partnership (HVA, RVA, 3VA with NWA and supported by ABC) has been commissioned to involve local people, groups, businesses and organisations in agreeing the best ways to build on communities’ strengths.
Today’s workshop • Telling our stories • Constructing a community time line • Mapping assets– people • – communities • Dreams
Creating a community asset map The actual and potential assets of: • Heart – what do we care about? • Heads – what do we know? • Hands – what can we do?
What are we working towards? • Our ambition is that when we (that is NHS, social care, voluntary organisations, service users patients, carers and the public) reach our deadline in August 2017 every patient or service user enjoys joined up care that supports them to live as independently as possible and achieve the best possible outcomes. • In plain English this means you will notice there is one system of health professionals, social workers and other support services working as a team to: • help you keep as healthy as possible and to act quickly if you become unwell or need help • make sure you have access to the services you need when and where you need them • if you need care away from home we will help you regain your independence and get back there as quickly as possible
Emerging Themes • Energy commitment passion and pride • A recognition of the reality communities face • Community assets clearly present – but many fragile • Limited strength in depth • Succession issues • Need to support key activists • Importance of community anchor buildings but issues with sustainability
Next Steps • Report to ESBT Steering Group 11 May • Development of locality teams (engagement events) • Local discussions about how to build on this activity
