  2. What is a negative? A word that makes a sentence mean “no” is called a negative.

  3. Common Negatives: Negative words: no, not, none, no-one, nothing, nowhere, neither, nobody, never Negative verbs: doesn’t, isn’t, wasn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t, won’t, can’t, don’t

  4. A double negative is when two negative words are used together in the same sentence. If the two negative words are talking about the same thing, they cancel each other out. This makes the message positive, changes the meaning of the sentence, and confuses the reader.

  5. If any two negative words are combined in the same idea, the sentence will be positive (which is the opposite to what you intended).

  6. Example: She can’t make friends with nobody. This actually means: She can make friends with somebody. Correct wording: She can’t make friends with anybody. OR She can make friends with nobody.

  7. Double Negative Re-writes Each of these sentences contains a double negative. Re-write each sentence so that it contains one negative. Example 1: Incorrect - Kim was not carrying no packages. Correct - Kim was not carrying any packages.ORKim was carrying no packages.

  8. Double Negative Re-writes Example 2: Incorrect - The teacher did not say nothing interesting. Correct - The teacher did not say anything interesting. OR The teacher said nothing interesting.

  9. Double Negative Re-writes Example 3: Incorrect - I can’t find my doll nowhere. Correct - I can’t find my doll anywhere. OR I can find my doll nowhere.

  10. Remember: Negative + Negative = Positive. So: Use one negative word in a sentence when you want to say that something is negative
