Supported Statements When good readers can point to information in a passage (fiction or non-fiction), and prove a statement is correct, the reader identifies a statement that is supported by the passage.
When a reader can NOT point to information in the passage and prove a statement is correct, the reader identifies a statement that is not supported by the passage. • Statements that are not supported may either be wrong, or simply not stated to know for sure.
Once there was a beautiful queen named Samantha. Everyone loved Samantha because she was a good queen. She ruled her kingdom fairly. Everyone was treated as equals. No one received special treatment. One day, Samantha was asked to settle an argument between two friends. Samantha asked each of them to tell their part of the story. She listened carefully to each of their stories. Then, after carefully considering all factors, she made her decision.
Statement: Samantha allowed her friends to get extra things that others did not.
