DCA Applications—Air Handler Units (AHU) (Generally Spring-return DCA) Outdoor (OA)/Return (RA) dampers Face & Bypass dampers Honeywell sells a full line of spring-return actuators
DCA Applications—Economizers • Use outdoor air (when appropriate, to cool building. • One DCA can control both RA and OA dampers to keep overall flow rate of air consistent • Larger units have logic built into controller system; smaller units use an economizer logic module • Large growth forecasted for economizer market due to code changes.
DCA Applications—VAV Units • Generally non-spring return • All VAV boxes require an actuator to control air flow. • Some VAV boxes have a re-heat coil—the valve is controlled with an actuator. • VAV boxes have specific requirements for actuator life (number of repositions) Honeywell sells a complete solution for VAV applications
DCA Applications—Unit Ventilator • Used in schools, hospitals, hotels, etc—anywhere segregated flow and control are required • Unit ventilators require a smaller actuator due to space constraints • Options exist for 2 actuators per ventilator—RA/OA damper and face & bypass damper. • Face & bypass damper generally non spring return; RA/OA damper can be either.

Selecting the Proper Actuator • Determine if a fail-safe actuator is required or not • Determine minimum torque required for application • Determine what control signal is required • 2-position • Floating • Modulating • Determine if internal end switches are required • Select actuator that meets requirements • Determine what, if any, external accessories may be required
Calculating Torque Requirements • Determine the damper type, face velocity/static pressure requirements and area in square feet • Determine torque per square foot required based on the table below • Based on torque required per square foot and damper area, multiply to get required minimum torque. • Select actuator torque with at least the minimum torque required.
