Note Taking Why learn how?
The Plan • Please take out a pencil/pen and a piece of paper. • Taking notes while a teacher is talking and while reading textbooks is a skill that can be learned – and we are going to practice right now! • I will read you 4 paragraphs • Write down what I say to the best of your ability. • The paragraphs will get progressively harder – challenge yourself to keep up! • It is very unlikely you will be able to get it all, but do what you can! In other words, ’do your best, and forget the rest’. • After we do the first four paragraphs, I will stop and ask you to read back the paragraph to me as close to the original as you can.”
How did you do? How many of you struggled? What if your notes were dependent on a grade? What would make it easier to capture important information?
Why is it an important skill? • Note taking is important for several reasons • Remember back to your learning style: Some people learn better hearing information, while others need to see and write down information to make it sink it. Writing notes helps information “stick” in the brain. • Technology can help you take notes – many high school and college students are using laptops to take their notes, which can be saved, backed up and shared! • Taking notes helps you highlight key information • Especially important to take good notes to be successful in high school and college!
Super Secret Formula • If you take notes, then you have something (in YOUR own words) that you can study from. • Your notes only need to make sense to you. • Pick out the main KEY words (probably cuts out 4/5’s of the words in the paragraph) • You can use symbols like arrows, shorthand like 2X, flow charts – whatever works for you! • Can use bullet points or chapter and subject headings when taking notes out of a book • Forget about adjectives ( the red car), articles (and, the) or any other “filler” information. You can put those back in later!
Paragraph #3 • Key Words: • “Hunger Games, Jen Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, 23rd March, 150 mil peeps, more than Titanic and Harry Potter 7.” • How did you do?
