Impetus for this initiative • Senate Task Force in 2011 • National concerns regarding NTT Faculty • Title confusion and proliferation • Desire to do more to recognize the contributions of this group of employees
Who are specialized faculty? • A range of nearly 40 titles of non-tenure system employees who are categorized as “Other Academics” by University Statutes, Art IX, Section 3c; • E.g., lecturers, instructors, modified professorial titles (research, clinical), visiting professors • 33.67% of IUs taught by specialized faculty in 2012-2013 (compared to 45.95% of IUs taught by tenure system faculty)
Foundational policies & practices • Hiring procedures • Offer letters • Clear job descriptions & performance expectations • Annual performance reviews • Access to grievance policies & procedures
Specialized Faculty Titles & Use • Three main categories: • teaching focused • research focused • clinical focused • Use of “adjunct” and “visiting” modifiers • Adjunct modifier for less than 50 % FTE • Visiting modifier reserved for Visiting Professors, time limited appointments of individuals more broadly engaged in all three missions
Career Advancement • Articulates promotional tracks • Senior Lecturer & Senior Instructor • Modified professorial titles (teaching, research, and clinical) • Recognizes a “teaching professor” title • New Provost’s Communication forthcoming on promotional procedures for research, clinical, and teaching professor tracks • Encouraged use of multi-year contracts with certain promotions/titles

Data on Specialized Faculty Full-Time Appointments and Salaries • In Spring 2013, there were a total of 363 full-time specialized faculty members in the academic units in the colleges (excluding visiting professors, unmodified) • In Spring 2013, there were 1,691 full-time tenure system faculty members • Mean and median salaries for tenure system faculty for that time period were: • Assistant Professors: $87,532 (mean) and $75,050 (median) • Associate Professors: $88,790 (mean) $84,065 (median) • Professors: $136,719 (mean) and $127,194 (median)
