How do I tell time to the nearest hour? When looking at a clock, there are two arrows called clock hands. The longer hand tells how many minutes past the hour it is. When it is pointed at the 12, we read it as o’clock. The shorter hand is the hour hand. It tells the hour from 1-12 o’clock. This hour hand is pointed at the 10. This clock says 10:00 or 10 o’clock.
Let’s look at some examples! 11:00 4:00 The hour hand is pointing to the 4. The minute hand is pointing to the 12 (o’clock). We read this as 4 o’clock. The hour hand is pointing to the 11. The minute hand is pointing to the 12 (o’clock). We read this as 11 o’clock.
Now you try a few! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *When the long hand points to the 12, we say o’clock 12:00 12 o’clock 2:00 2 o’clock 7:00 7 o’clock
Try Again! Remember: The shorter hand points to the hour and is a number between 1 and 12. The longer hand points to the minutes. When it points to 12, we read it as o’clock.
Now try this one! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *When the long hand points to the 12, we say o’clock 1:00 1 o’clock 6:00 6 o’clock 5:00 5 o’clock
Try Again! Remember: The shorter hand points to the hour and is a number between 1 and 12. The longer hand points to the minutes. When it points to 12, we read it as o’clock.
Now try this one! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *When the long hand points to the 12, we say o’clock 9:00 9 o’clock 2:00 2 o’clock 10:00 10 o’clock
Try Again! Remember: The shorter hand points to the hour and is a number between 1 and 12. The longer hand points to the minutes. When it points to 12, we read it as o’clock.
Practice. 12:00 12 o’clock 3:00 3 o’clock 11:00 11 o’clock 7:00 7 o’clock 2:00 2 o’clock 1:00 1 o’clock
Try Again! Remember: The shorter hand points to the hour and is a number between 1 and 12. The longer hand points to the minutes. When it points to 12, we read it as o’clock.
Well done! Now, let’s tell time to the nearest 5 minutes!
Before we begin, let’s practice an important skill!
Study the pattern below. 5, 10, 15, __, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45
Based on the rule in the pattern, what number would go in the blank? 5, 10, 15, __, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 18 16 20
Try Again! Look at the number line below. How many jumps do you make between each number? 5 10
Way to go! The pattern is skip counting by 5’s!
How do I use the minute hand to tell time? Example: This minute hand started at the 12 which we say as o’clock or 00 minutes past the hour. 00 As the minute (long) hand moves around the clock, it skip counts by 5’s. Count with me! 55 05 50 10 15 45 20 40 35 25 30 The minute hand moved to the 1. When I skip count, this is 5 minutes past the hour or 10:05.
Let’s look at some examples! 11:40 4:15 00 00 05 05 10 10 15 15 40 20 35 25 30 The minute hand is pointing to the 3. The minute hand is pointing to the 8. When I skip count, the 3 is equal to 15 minutes. When I skip count, the 8 is equal to 40 minutes. The hour hand points to the 4. So, the time is 4:15. The hour hand points to the 11. The time is 11:40.
Now you try a few! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *Start skip counting by 5’s from the 12 (00) to find the minutes (the long hand). 00 2:00 2:30 3:30 What time is it?
Try Again! When finding minutes, remember to start at the 00 and skip count by 5’s! 00 Hint: The longer hand points to the minutes. Hint: The shorter hand points to the hour. 55 05 50 10 45 15 20 40 35 25 30
Now try this one! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *Start skip counting by 5’s from the 12 (00) to find the minutes (the long hand). 00 11:30 5:30 6:55 What time is it?
Try Again! When finding minutes, remember to start at the 00 and skip count by 5’s! 00 Hint: The longer hand points to the minutes. Hint: The shorter hand points to the hour. 55 05 50 10 45 15 20 40 35 25 30
Practice. 3:50 9:15 10:15 2:45 9:10 9:05
Practice. 8:05 5:40 8:25 7:55 11:35 6:50
Try Again! When finding minutes, remember to start at the 00 and skip count by 5’s! 00 Hint: The longer hand points to the minutes. Hint: The shorter hand points to the hour. 55 05 50 10 45 15 20 40 35 25 30
Congratulations! You are now a Time Telling Master!
