What time is it?. How do I tell time to the nearest hour?. When looking at a clock, there are two arrows called clock hands. The longer hand tells how many minutes past the hour it is. When it is pointed at the 12, we read it as o’clock.

  1. What time is it?

  2. How do I tell time to the nearest hour? When looking at a clock, there are two arrows called clock hands. The longer hand tells how many minutes past the hour it is. When it is pointed at the 12, we read it as o’clock. The shorter hand is the hour hand. It tells the hour from 1-12 o’clock. This hour hand is pointed at the 10. This clock says 10:00 or 10 o’clock.

  3. Let’s look at some examples! 11:00 4:00 The hour hand is pointing to the 4. The minute hand is pointing to the 12 (o’clock). We read this as 4 o’clock. The hour hand is pointing to the 11. The minute hand is pointing to the 12 (o’clock). We read this as 11 o’clock.

  4. Now you try a few! Remember: *The short hand points to the hour *When the long hand points to the 12, we say o’clock 12:00 12 o’clock 2:00 2 o’clock 7:00 7 o’clock

  23. How do I use the minute hand to tell time? Example: This minute hand started at the 12 which we say as o’clock or 00 minutes past the hour. 00 As the minute (long) hand moves around the clock, it skip counts by 5’s. Count with me! 55 05 50 10 15 45 20 40 35 25 30 The minute hand moved to the 1. When I skip count, this is 5 minutes past the hour or 10:05.

  24. Let’s look at some examples! 11:40 4:15 00 00 05 05 10 10 15 15 40 20 35 25 30 The minute hand is pointing to the 3. The minute hand is pointing to the 8. When I skip count, the 3 is equal to 15 minutes. When I skip count, the 8 is equal to 40 minutes. The hour hand points to the 4. So, the time is 4:15. The hour hand points to the 11. The time is 11:40.
