Task 5 – Systems of play • In small group, can you please state how many different systems of play their are in futsal and comment on their advantages and disadvantages (10 minutes)
Systems of play • The main systems of play include: the 2:2, 2:1:1, 1:2:1, 3:1 and 4:0. • The most recognized formations taught to young players are the 2:2, 1:2:1 and 2:2:1. • Within each system there are variations
The 2:2 system of play • One of the first systems that was introduced in the 1950´s • It consists of • 2 players positioned in the defensive area (1CD and 1 winger) • 2 players positioned in the offensive area (1 winger and 1 striker) • Approach that requires players to rely on making the direct pass up the pitch from the defensive area to the offensive area • Does not require quick interchangeable passing or high levels of physical fitness • There are 4 main variations of the 2:2 system of play, being the ´basic´ 2:2 system of play, the 2:2 ´rectangle shape´, the 2:2 ´Y shape´ and the 2:2 ´L shape´
The 1:2:1 System of play • The 1:2:1 system of play is one of the oldest formations • It is not used in modern day Futsal due to that it limits players being able to move and interchange freely around the pitch • It consists of one defender who barely moves position, two wingers and one fixed attacker • Attacker or pivot maintains a fixed position with the two wingers being quick, capable of providing constant defensive and attacking support
The 2:1:1 system of play • The 2:1:1 is comprised of 2 defenders, 1 midfield player and 1 attacking player • It is a fairly defensive approach to playing the game • Highly dependant upon having a midfield player who is physically fit and capable of constantly running, moving and creating scoring opportunities to the pivot player or alternatively themselves • This system is often interchangeable, if the midfielder runs back to support defensive pair, then it becomes 3:1, whilst if midfielder takes up attacking positions in becomes 2:2
The 3:1 system of play • A modern system of play • Allows for movement of players throughout the court • The 3:1 system of play arrived as a result of rule changes, and increased physical and technical abilities of players • It began with the interchangeable manner of play from players, whereby the 3 defensive players continuously change and switch positions on the field of play • It is highly dependant upon physical fitness • The striker (pivot) player can be used as a • Reference player (static pivot) • Moveable pivot
The 4:0 System of play • The most modern system of play created in Spain • It consists of a team of players who take up both defensive and attacking roles • In possession: players interchange without a reference pivot player • Without possession: all players take up defensive roles • This game is reliant on counter attacking and invading the empty spaces behind the opposing teams defense • Players should have high technical and physical ability
The 3:2 System of play • Most recently created due to goalkeepers being allowed to play outside their penalty area • It allows numerical advantage for the team in possession of the ball • Goalkeepers are required to have a good ability of playing with their feet • Goalkeepers take up central positions or on the wings
