State Plan for Independent Living • Developed by Statewide Independent Living Council • 3-year Plan • Public Input • Resources • Goal 2 - Work in conjunction with the Office of Community Integration to assist in implementing the housing and transportation initiatives identified in the Strategic Plan to assure continued community integration of Virginians with disabilities.

SPIL Goal 2 ObjectivesIn collaboration with others - • Determine local housing capacity needs • Develop and pursue strategies to address local housing needs with policymakers • Encourage effective participation in community housing planning processes • Encourage use of the Transportation and Housing Alliance Toolkit • Raise awareness of the housing needs of people moving from institutions

SPIL Goal 2 ObjectivesIn collaboration with others - • Attend local housing planning meetings • Develop relationships with local housing authorities, and provide an understanding of housing resource needs of consumers • Enhance the knowledge of HUD and local housing authorities on the housing/community living needs and preferences of people with disabilities • Create a mechanism to track local changes in public policy and relate ongoing needs/solutions to state and national housing entities

  9. Section 8 Vouchers • Awareness of the need for vouchers for people with disabilities • Encouragement to apply for new vouchers • Assistance to prepare applications • Assistance to identify people in institutions who want to transition • Collaborative relationship to support PHA activity

Money Follows the Person • Goal 2 of the SPIL: • Support development of the MFP Operational Protocol to train social work, counseling and other relevant staff in institutions who work with residents with disabilities about community living options and resources available to those individuals. • Awareness of MFP to residents and staff • Advocating for housing options
