CFI Call 7 Get ready…set….go! 100M on the line
Type of proposal? • Build on past successful CFI from calls 1-5 • Majority to be funded will be Leading edge (LEFs) (CFI priority), but a few New Initiatives (NIF) will be allowed to go forward • Can be based on “one” component from an earlier call (i.e. not whole project) • Must “sell” the scientific excellence
Past “successful” proposals • For rounds 1-5 projects with Medicine Lead • That have been successful ~10 (some leads have had multiple CFIs) • That are incomplete or lack data ~3 • With a successful round 6 on same topic =1 • Inter institutional: • 5-6 with McGill partners/leads
Time line and process • Internal call out has gone out through listserv • Information session by FIPP (Nathalie Foisset) week of March 21st • Faculty deadline - May 5thfor letter of intent/proposal • Faculty will ranks proposals and submit the ranked proposals to VP RIR on May 19
LOI – 6-7 page submission • Need estimate of cost, renovations • 1-page on quality, innovation and results achieved from past investment • 2-pages on proposed research/technology development..why innovative and leading edge internationally? • Principal users – group must have a track record of collaboration
LOI cont’d • 1 page - Need for infrastructure (capacity building etc) • 1 page- Collaborations and partnerships (multidisciplinary…) • 1 page - Benefits to Quebec / Canada. ..how add to the economy…feasibility, time line • ¼ page –institutional priorities and commitments
Ranking within Faculty • Faculty evaluation committee will look at: • Past successes • Vision and how this fits in with the Faculty’s or Affiliated RI’s strategic plan • Value added for McGill • Number of Faculty that will benefit • Space availability, feasibility etc
Central review and process • Strategic Advisory Committee will evaluate the LOIs…Committee to contain 3 external members who know the CFI process • Will submit their top choices to the Executive Committee May31st who will make the final cull by June 8th • PIs will be informed by June 15th • Full proposal will be prepared by Spring 2012 • Submission to CFI late 2012
CFIs led from other Universities • Faculty/University must have a heads up on this…will not sign off on any “last minute” deals • There will be a firm deadline for consideration of these (to be provided later) • the need for infrastructure has to be well delineated with appropriate costing and this takes time…
