  1. The 4 Major Parts Of The Brain By Shelby Bursey Werlanka Pierre Janey Adams

  2. Brain Stem • Size of a thumb. (approximately 3 inches) • Made up of four structures: • Midbrain • Involved with vision and hearing • Pons • Controls breathing • Medulla Oblongata • Vital visceral activities (heart rate, BP, etc.) • Reticular formation • Motor control, involved with awake/sleep cycles.

  3. Cerebral Cortex • It is a layer of the brain, in the grey matter, • It covers 2/3 of the brain, • Responsible for: • Speech, • Memory, • Logical, • Emotion, • Consciousness, • Interpretation of sensation, • Voluntary movement.

  4. Cerebellum • The cerebellum has 2 hemispheres and a convoluted surface. • Made up of gray matter on the inside. Inner is made of white matter. • Gray because of the unmyelinated nerve fibers • White because it contains myelinated nerve fibers. • Provides the precise timing of skeletal muscle activity, and controls our balance and equilibrium. • The cerebellum is majorly affected when alcohol enters the body.

  5. Diencephalon • A.K.A the interbrain • Major structures include: • Thalamus • Relay station for sensory and pulses • Hypothalamus • Plays a role in regulation of body temp, water balance, metabolism • Epithalamus

  6. Cerebral Hemispheres • Most Superior part of the brain. • Larger than the brain stem, cerebellum, and diencephalon combined. • Encloses most of the brain stem. • The surface has elevated ridges of tissues called gyri, separated by shallow grooves called sulci. • Fissures separate large region of the brain.

  7. Cerebral Hemispheres • Each cerebral hemisphere has 3 basic regions: • Superficial cortex of gray matter • Internal white matter • Basal nuclei , • Which is islands of gray matter situated deep within white matter. • The Cerebral Hemispheres are separated into four main lobes:

  8. Frontal Lobe • The frontal lobe is responsible for: • Speech • Movement • Language comprehension

  9. Parietal Lobe • Responsible for: • Recognizing pain • Recognizing light • Recognizing touch • Controls sensory receptors

  10. Occipital Lobe • Responsible for: • Speech • Understanding languages • Eyesight

  11. Temporal Lobe • Responsible for: • Auditory (hearing) • General interpretation
