Common Core • Our district is making sure to do everything necessary to meet the Common Core Standards for the 2019-2020 school year. • High Level, Text Based Discussions • Focus on Process, Not Just Content • Create Assignments for Real Audiences and a Real Purpose • Teach Argument, Not Persuasion • Increase Text Complexity
Curriculum • The goal of Social Studies 8 is for students to examine and analyze the history of the United States from the colonial period up to the beginning of World War I. This course requires students to display a number of academic skills.
Class Schedule • Most days we will begin with warm-up questions based upon the material I am currently teaching, or review from a previous unit. • This will be followed by either taking notes, class activities/assignments, or quizzes/tests. • The entire year is mapped out in the class syllabus, which is located on my website. Teaching Strategies & Methods Most lectures are in PowerPoint format. Hands-on activities that my include drawing, coloring, or projects. Group work or partner activities Presentations Creating stories/narratives from historical perspectives Debates/Case Studies Nearpod/Discovery on the Chromebooks
8th Grade Expectations • We will respect ourselves, others, and property. • We will not use obscenities, eat, drink or chew gum. • We will follow all verbal and written instructions. • We will be seated and prepared to learn before the bell rings. • Students will raise their hand and be selected before speaking out. • Backpacks/purses will remain on the floor during class. • Cell phones and iPods will be confiscated if seen out on campus. (This includes ear buds)
