Join the Avon Environmental Commission in their effort to protect the environment and support global sustainability with the Green Merchant Program. By reducing the use of non-recyclable products and promoting the use of "green" alternatives, Avon merchants can make a positive impact on our local environment. Volunteers will provide guidance and resources to help merchants adopt sustainable practices. Green Merchant Awards will be given annually to recognize businesses that actively participate in the program.

The Green Merchant Program is a Voluntary Program to Encourage Merchants to Reduce the Use of Non-Recyclable Products and to Use “Green” Products
Avon Merchants have been taking Steps to Reduce the Use of Non-Recyclable ProductsTHE AEC Green Merchant Program is designed Support Those Efforts and Assist Our Merchants in Achieving Greater Reductions and Increased Use of “Green” Products
HOW the Green Merchant Program will work: • AEC Members and Local Volunteers, including students from Avon Elementary School, will reach out to Avon Merchants • The Volunteers will provide the Merchants with a list of steps they can take to reduce the use of Nonrecyclable Products and to Use “Green” Products • The Volunteers will also provide the Avon Merchants with a list of links for “Green” Products
Steps That Merchants Can Take 1. Use paper bags or reusable bags instead of plastic bags for customer purchases. 2. Reduce or eliminate the use of plastic straws by using paper straws or reusable stainless steel or glass straws. 3. Use reusable utensils, or biodegradable utensils, such as wood or corn starch utensils, or utensils made out of recycled materials. 4. Use reusable or paper cups, containers and bowls. 5. Use biodegradable lids for cups and containers. 6. Only use plastic containers that are recyclable. 7. Have recycling containers available for customers. 8. For restaurant take-out, encourage customers to use their own containers instead of Styrofoam. 9. Use Green cleaning supplies whenever possible.
The Award • For those Merchants who Pledge to Try to Take Steps Appropriate for their Business to Reduce the Use of Nonrecyclable Products and to Use “Green” products, they will Receive a Green Merchant Award • The Award will be a Decal that they can Place in their Store Window • The Green Merchant Awards will be Given Annually at a Borough Commissioners Meeting
