SMARTS/GENIUS Overview What is GENIUS? • Global Expertise Network for Industry, University, and Scholars (GENIUS) is a global WWW network and database of scientific and scholarly expertise containing profiles entered and maintained by scholars and researchers at leading universities and research institutions throughout the world. • GENIUS provides a searchable resource for locating academic investigators/research partners for potential collaborations. • Search profiles based on Keywords, Research Interests, Institution, State, and/or Country. You can also perform free-text searches on full profiles.

  4. Back to Contents Creating a GENIUS Profile

  5. The New Profile Registration page will appear. You will be required to enter your first and last name, email address, department affiliation, and username and password. When complete, click Submit. It is extremely important that your email address is present and accurate to ensure proper notification of funding opportunities. An alphabetical list of institutions will appear. Highlight your institution and click Select. Click Create a New Profile from the SMARTS/GENIUS Search main page to create a GENIUS profile. You must create a GENIUS profile to receive SMARTS matches and/or to store your Curriculum Vitae. Creating a GENIUS Profile Registering for GENIUS

  6. Account Status indicates whether a profile has been validated or is pending validation. A profile must be validated by your Module Administrator in order to receive SMARTS matches. The Biographical Sketch Template enables you to customize and generate the official NIH 398 forms from data stored in your GENIUS profile. You can also export your full CV into Word, modify the information, and use it outside of InfoEd’s system. These categories are used to tailor search results for more targeted SMARTS matches. These categories are used to store Curriculum Vitae within GENIUS. General and Keywords categories need to be completed in order to receive SMARTS matches or to store your Curriculum Vitae. The Full Profile View will display all of the categories/information you have entered into your profile. This is the name of the investigator/faculty member and the institution with which they are affiliated.   8. The General Information page stores all of the investigator’s contact/institution information. In order to receive SMARTS matches, you need to fill out the General and Keywords categories. Required fields are Name, Department, Email, and Citizenship. Click General from the Profile Summary Page. Click Department for instructions on selecting your primary department. Under Private Profile, select Yes to prevent your profile from being searchable within the GENIUS database. Select No if you would like your profile information to be visible to investigators at your institution or globally. Setting Up SMARTS Categories Required for SMARTS To move from one field to the next, use the TAB key on your keyboard or the mouse.

  9. Choose the department where you hold academic rank as your primary department by checking the box to the left of the appropriate department. Make sure the primary option button is selected. A list of all of the departments within your institution will appear when you click on the Department link from the General screen. Click Save Changes to return to the GeneralInformation page. To choose additional secondary departments with which you are affiliated, click the box to the left of each appropriate department title. Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Departments

  11. The Username Change page will appear when you click Change Username from the General Information page. Enter your new username in the Enter New Username text box. Click Save Changes to return to the General Information page. Setting Up SMARTS Changing Your Username

  12. Question 3 allows you to specify how you would like to receive your SMARTS matches (in a single email message or one “hit” per e-mail. Question 4 allows you to specify whether you only want to receive SMARTS output of programs from U.S. sponsors only. Question 5 allows you to specify the format in which you would like to receive your SMARTS output (Full Program or Summary Format). Question 2 allows you to specify whether you would like to receive SMARTS matches. To receive SMARTS matches, make sure the Yes option button is selected. Question 1 allows you to specify whether you would like prospective partners/collaborators, who find you in GENIUS searches, to contact you directly or make initial contact with your institutional contact. Question 4 Question 3 Question 5 Setting Up SMARTS Categories Required for SMARTS After you have entered your General information, there are five questions at the bottom of the General Information page that need to be answered in order to receive SMARTS e-mail notifications.

  16. Setting Up SMARTS Clicking the full description link from within your email message will bring you to the full SPIN program as it appears in the SPIN search engine.

  17. Click Keywords from the Profile Summary Page. Setting Up SMARTS Categories Required for SMARTS Once you have completed the General Information page, you need to fill out Keywords based on your areas of interest. The keywords you select will be used in SMARTS matching.

Specific Keywords Within a Major Topic Area Alphabetical Listing • Choose specific keywords from an alphabetical listing of the Keyword Thesaurus. • Choose an entire division of keywords by major topic for a very broad search. • Choose specific keywords within a major topic area.   19. Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Keywords Since keywords of interest may fall across two or more major divisions, you can search the entire Keyword Thesaurus for a particular word(s), by entering a root word (ex. cardio) into the Search for a Particular Keyword box. Click Search.

  20. Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Keywords Keywords containing the root word “cardio” will be returned. Highlight keywords from the resulting list and click Select/Save Changes to save keywords.

  21. Keywords that appear in all caps on the list indicate general keywords. Selecting these keywords will increase the number of general programs you receive as SMARTS matches. Once you have selected keywords, click Select/Save Changes to save keywords. Click Return to return to the Profile Summary Page. Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Keywords To select multiple keywords from the list, hold down the Control key (or Command key on a Mac) while clicking the mouse. OR Logic is automatically imposed on selected keywords.

  22. Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Keywords You can choose to receive Exact Matches or Hierarchical Matches on keywords.

Setting Up SMARTS Selecting Keywords Hierarchical Matches: If you chose the same keyword in combination with Hierarchical Matches, you would receive SMARTS matches of SPIN programs that contain that exact keyword, plus SPIN programs containing any keywords that fall hierarchically under HEALTH AND SAFETY/MEDICAL SCIENCES/BIOMEDICAL, such as Anatomical System/Sites, Bone Marrow, Cardiovascular System, etc. Exact Matching: In the example above, if you chose the keyword HEALTH AND SAFETY/MEDICAL SCIENCES/BIOMEDICAL in combination with Exact Matches, you would receive SMARTS matches of SPIN programs that contain that exact keyword.

  24. Setting Up SMARTS Deleting Keywords Once you select keywords, they will appear at the bottom of the Keywords screen. To delete existing keywords, select the check boxes next to the keywords you would like to delete and click Delete Checked Keywords.

Select Award Types if you are looking for a particular funding mechanism (ex. research grants only) to exclude funding mechanisms you are not interested in (ex. fellowships, internships, etc.) Once you select keywords based on your areas of interest, you have the option of selecting additional criteria in the categories under Used in SMARTS matching to tailor your search. Sponsor Types describe the type of organization administering the grant/award (ex. federal, foundation, etc.) Locations Tenable allows you to specify where you would like to go to carry out the award. Include Any/No Restrictions to include programs that do not specify location restrictions. To exclude programs for which you are not eligible, select Applicant Types that describe you (ex. faculty member, researcher/investigator, graduate student, etc.) Geographical Restrictions should be used to restrict programs based on where you are located. Choose your state and region in combination with No RESTRICTIONS. Setting Up SMARTS Categories Required for SMARTS

  27. GENIUS categories enable you to store your Curriculum Vitae. You may enter information into as may categories as needed to satisfy your personal requirements. CV Categories Entering CV Information GENIUS categories and their purpose are described below. Languages: List proficiency in all languages. Advisees: Store data about students/scholars with whom you have served as thesis advisor. Patents: List all patents granted. Collaborators: List individuals with whom you have collaborated on a project, book, article, report, or paper. Professional Associations and Societies: List all professional associations to which you have belonged. Committee Memberships: List any committees on which you have served. Professional Licenses/Certificates: List all professional licenses and certificates obtained. Courses Taught: List the courses you have taught. Publications: List all works you have had published. Creative Activities: List any exhibits, performances, public collections, public artistic presentations, etc. in which you have participated. Research: Enter information about your research and research interests/areas of expertise. Reviewed Works: List all reviewed works (peer-reviewed bodies of work not scheduled to be published or previously published.) Education: List educational background. Sponsored Funding: List any current, past, and pending support from projects and proposals from all sources. Employment: List your current and previous employment. Honors and Awards: List any honors and awards received.

Once you enter information into the GENIUS categories, you can customize and generate the official NIH 398 Biosketch from data stored in your GENIUS profile and export your CV information into Word. Biographical Sketch Templates Creating Biographical Sketch Templates We are now going to create a sample Biosketch Template tailored around the topic of cardiology.

  30. The “Please Enter a name for your New CV Bio” dialog box will appear. To create a Biosketch Template, click Add under the Biographical Sketch heading on the Profile Summary Page.   31. You can select the order in which each category will appear in the the Full CV Word document format. FF and FF Modular Biosketch formats generate the official 398 form. The categories can not be rearranged. You can determine the sequence in which each item within a category will be displayed on the FF, FF Modular, and Full CV biosketch formats. Information under the General category will automatically be displayed first. Click Save Layout when you are finished ordering the categories and the information within each category. Determines the order in which the category name will be displayed in the Full CV format. Determines the order in which the category information will be displayed in the FF, FF Modular, and Full CV formats. Leaving the drop-down box blank will omit that information from being displayed in the selected formats. Biographical Sketch Templates Creating Biographical Sketch Templates The CV Bio Setup Form will appear displaying all of the information that has been entered into your GENIUS profile.

  32. The “Do you want to save the changes made on this screen?” dialog box will appear. The CV Bio Setup Form will appear. Click Return to return to the Profile Summary Page. Click OK to save the changes made on the screen. Biographical Sketch Templates Creating Biographical Sketch Templates

  33. The Profile Summary Page will display each of your Biographical Sketch Templates once they have been created. Biographical Sketch Templates Creating Biographical Sketch Templates The process can be repeated to customize multiple biosketches within your GENIUS profile to be used with all NIH proposals.

  34. Once you create a biosketch template, you can view the forms in three formats. The official NIH 398 Biosketch forms will appear in .pdf format and will contain the information that you selected from your GENIUS profile. The CV information that you selected from your GENIUS profile will be displayed in a Word document. This document can be saved to your hard drive and edited in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect. Click the .PDF icon under the FF or FF Mod header next to the template you want to view. Click here to view FF or FF Modular form. Click the Word icon under the Full CV header next to the template you want to view. Click Download Document to view the Full CV. Biographical Sketch Templates Viewing Biographical Sketch Templates

  35. The CV Bio Setup Form will appear where you can make your changes. Click Return to return to the Profile Summary Page. The “Are you sure you want to delete this CV Bio?” dialog box will appear. Click OK to delete the CV Bio. To delete your Biosketch Template, click the delete icon under the Delete header next to the template you want to delete. Once you have created a biosketch template, you can edit or delete your biosketch at any time.   37. Once you create a GENIUS profile, you have control over your profile information and can access your profile at any time to make changes. The Profile Summary Page will appear where you can edit the appropriate categories of your profile. To edit your GENIUS profile, click Edit Existing Profile from the SMARTS/GENIUS Search main page. SMARTS/GENIUS Search Main Page The SMARTS/GENIUS Search main page is broken up into 3 areas: • SMARTS/GENIUS (Create a New Profile, Edit Existing Profile, Administrative Tools) • Quick Links (Canned searches of new profiles that have been added to GENIUS, recent funding awards, and recent patents/publications) • Searching (Quick Search & Advanced Search)

  42. Click Search. Quick Search Quick Search To perform a Quick Search, type the word(s) you want to search for in theQuick Search for free text box. From thein Fields… drop-down menu, select to search Keywords, Research, Patents, or Publications. (The categories correspond to information that each investigator/researcher entered in their corresponding GENIUS profile categories.) From the in Country… drop-down menu, select the country from which you would like to search for investigators/researchers. From theReturn Results drop-down menu, select the number of results you would like to view per page.

  43. Quick Search The GENIUS Search Results page will appear where you can view your search results.

  44. Advanced Search To conduct a more detailed search, click the Advanced Search Page link at the bottom of the GENIUS Search Results page or at the bottom of the Quick Search screen.

  45. Click Hyperlink Categories to make selections Type a word or phrase into the Free Text Fields Advanced Search There are six categories available to conduct an Advanced Search. By entering data into a category, the system will search for a match to your query within GENIUS profiles. The category search is looking for the same words or phrases that can be found in other investigators’ or researchers’ profiles.

  46. Advanced Search Advanced Search Categories Search categories and their purpose are described below. Research Interests Allows you to enter a word or phrase to search the Research field of a profile. Full Profile Search Allows you to enter a word or phrase to search an entire GENIUS profile. from Institutions Allows you to search for a potential collaborator(s) from a particular institution. in States Allows you to search for potential collaborator(s) within a certain state. in Country(s) Allows you to search for potential collaborator(s) within a certain country. Keywords Allows you to search for investigators who have chosen a specific keyword(s) from the SPIN Keyword Thesaurus based on their areas of interest.

  47. This search will find all profiles located at institutions in the U.S.A. that contain the phrase biological sciences. Enter Biological Sciences into the Full Profile Search free text box to search an entire GENIUS Profile for that phrase. We are now going to run a sample search utilizing a few search categories. Click in Country(s) to select U.S.A. Advanced Search Advanced Search Categories

  48. You can view and/or delete criteria from a search by clicking Delete Items at the bottom of the Advanced Search page. Advanced Search View/Delete Search Criteria To delete a search criterion, select the check box to the left of the search item(s) that you would like to remove. Click Delete Items to return to the Advanced Search page.
