  1. Climate Action Plan for WMU Presentation to Faculty Senate November 10, 2011 Paul Pancella, for the subcommittee ACUPCC  American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment GHG  Greenhouse Gasses

  2. Subcommittee members • Paul Pancella, Chair, Physics faculty • HalukAktan , Engineering faculty • Jeff Alexander, Transportation Services • Dave Barnes, Geosciences faculty • Steve Bertman, Chemistry faculty • Kate Binder, graduate student, Office for Sustainability • Chris Caprara, Facilities management • CariDeLong, Natural Areas manager • Kirk Dillery, Facilities management, Energy • Duane Hampton, Geosciences faculty • Sarah Hill, Environmental Studies faculty • George Jarvis, Power Plant manager • Steve Kohler, Environmental Studies chair • John Miller, Chemistry faculty • Chris Pyzik, Facilities management, Planning • Yusuke Saito, undergraduate exchange student

  3. Context and Timeframe • President Dunn signed ACUPCC in July, 2009 • Now need a plan to get climate neutral by a target date, means zero net GHG emitted • Plan must be final and approved by the end of this calendar year. • Although 670 colleges and universities have signed on, we are the only research/doctoral university in Michigan to do so as of today. (GVSU and K are in) • President Dunn is a member of the ACUPCC Steering Committee, its chief governing body.

  4. Report outline • Introduction • Campus GHG Emissions • Strategies for reducing GHG Emissions • Educational Efforts • Research Efforts • Community Outreach Plans • Financing the Recommendations • Tracking Progress Format suggested in 2007 Implementation Guide for Climate Action Planning, ACUPCC

  5. I Introduction • Lots of material on sustainability efforts at WMU to date. • Growth projections: Physical Plant is fairly flat in foreseeable future, except for addition of medical school (+2% 2014, +2% 2020?). Modest enrollment increase. • Target: Climate neutral by 2066 II GHG Emissions • Will summarize 2008-09 findings (2 inventories done) • New baseline will be 2010-11 fiscal year • Will show some recent trends • Graphs to illustrate projected reductions, interim targets

  6. III Reduction Strategies • General Energy Demand reduction • Power Plant changes, stationary combustion • Purchased Electricity • Commuting • Campus Vehicles • Air Travel, including study abroad • Solid Waste and H. Wastewater • d • Fugitive Emissions • Renewable Energy, on campus and off • Negative contributors: green space, purchased offsets, local investments in energy conservation, etc. Really small

  7. V Research Efforts IV Educational Efforts • Carbon capture and sequestration • Advancing practical, local, energy storage methods • Renewable energy generating technologies • New technologies for energy management and conservation in buildings and manufacturing • Biomass as an energy source for stationary power generation or as fuel for transportation VI Community Outreach VII Financing
