The importance of the industry • Norway as an export nation: • 95% (2000 products) are exported to 150 countries • 3rd largest exporter of seafood in the world • 2004: • Total export NOK 28.2 billion • Salmon and trout: NOK 11.4 / USD 1.8 billion
Key factors for success: • Long and clean coastline • Good public infrastructure • Predictable and stable regulation regime • Innovative thinking and exchange of expertise • Strong focus on research

MUNICIPALITY • Registers and makes the application public with a 4 week deadline to make comments • Sends the application with comments from the hearing and the municipality's own evaluation to the Directorate of Fisheries. APPLICANT Sends application to regional office of the Directorate of Fisheries Licence/rejection COAST DIRECTORATE Decision according to Acts related to harbours and fairways • REGIONAL OFFICE OF THE DIRECTORATE OF FISHERIES • Registers application • Receives comments after a hearing • Sends the application to the County Governor, County Veterinary and the Coast Directorate • Decision according to the Act relating to breeding of fish, shellfish etc. FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITY Decision according to Food Act and the Act concerning the welfare of animals • COUNTY GOVERNOR • Decision according to the Pollution Control Act • Comments on environmental, game and fish issues and gives a general evaluation

The way ahead – what can be learned… • There are no easy solutions • Success require time, funding and efforts • Some knowledge may be transferable / adaptable • The possibilities are enormous due to limited potential growth in traditional fisheries ”There will be trials and errors, but you can succeed”
