PICNIC Demo Module 2IP-based utility outlets 陳育瑋、方煒 台大生機系
Objective Development of a demo module • providing utility outlets that can be used for home appliance capable of locally manual control and remotely on/off control through internet. • teaching usage of PICNIC. • teaching VB programming.
Software • Written in Visual Basic v6 (Microsoft, USA) • Required PICOCX.ocx (Active X 控制項)
Device • PICNIC • SSR: solid state relay • Relay or utility outlet
Solid State Relay (SSR) Output terminal Input terminal
3 way and 4 way switch • Three-way-switch is used when providing control in two locations for one home appliance. • In between 2 three-way-switches, 1 four-way-switch is needed to provide control in 3 locations for one home appliance. • In between 2 three-way-switches, installing n four-way-switches can provide control in n+2 locations.
On/off control in 2 locations for one home appliance AC 110V Home appliance
On/off control in 3 locations for one home appliance AC 110V Home appliance
Home appliance on/off control in 2 locations with one side connect to the internet Relay A connect PICNIC Home appliance outlet Internet Toggle Switch SSR Relay B connect same outlet from above
An example: Lamps control Control 8 TFLs (110 VAC ) Control 2 Fans (110 VAC )
110V Relay PIC 110V RB4 SSR
Demo module ver.1 • Replacing relays with utility outlets • Up to 8 outlets per Picnic • One outlet required one SSR
Outlet#1 110V Home appliance 1 110V SSR#1 PIC To SSR#1 RB4 Digital output ports To SSR#2 RB5 To SSR#3 RB6 To SSR#4 RB7
Outlet#2 110V Home appliance 2 PICNIC SSR#2 To SSR#1 RB4 Digital output ports To SSR#2 RB5 To SSR#3 RB6 To SSR#4 RB7

Problem: The person at remote side needs to know the current status (on or off) of the home appliance Relay A connect PICNIC Home appliance outlet Internet Toggle Switch SSR Relay B connect same outlet from above
Demo module ver.2 • Modified version of module ver.1 • Up to 4 outlets per Picnic • One outlet required 1 SSR and 1 Relay
Demo module ver.2 Outlet#2 110V Home appliance 2 Relay#2 PICNIC SSR#2 From Relay#2 RB0 Digital Input ports To SSR#1 RB4 Digital output ports To SSR#2 RB5 To SSR#3 RB6 To SSR#4 RB7
A commercial productIP-relay • IP Relay is an Ethernet-enabled box containing 1 RS-232 serial port and 2 relays with contacts on a terminal block. The device can be also used as a remote RS-232 serial port (the Virtual Serial Port drives software for windows is free) or as RS232/ethernet converter (terminal server). The remote device can be switched on/off or reset using the ethernet i/o relays. http://www.hw-group.com/products/ip_relay/index_en.html
Usage examples • Remote monitoring of IP camera system's failure • Remote control of the network configuration • Remote control and restarting of micowawe connections. • Remote devices control (ventilation, door opening..)
A commercial productI/O Controller • I/O Controller is a unit containing 8x digital input over ethernet, 8x digital output over ethernet and RS-232/485 serial (Terminal server) interface. All the interfaces are accessible over a network using the M2M (Machine to Machine) protocol on TCP/IP. http://www.hw-group.com/products/io_controller/index_en.html
Applications examples • Remote control of technology over RS-232 and RS-485 bus • Remote control of displays and signalling • Remote reading of PIR sensors, door contacts and security systems • Remote relay control • Industrial I/O • Card readers, RFID readers • Sales machines • Security alarms • Attendance systems • UPS controll and logging • Bar code readers
