Worldwidefencing coaches training program 2009-2010Results WHY do we have this program? There is no official training program for the fencing coaches in 85% of the countries affiliated to the FIE. The number of coaches is absolutely insufficient, and their qualifications (diploma and course) must be developed. Most coaches have empirical knowledge, having gone directly went from fencer to coach, without following any specific studies. However, national federations need qualified coaches in order to correctly teach the technical fundamentals of fencing to young fencers. HOW was this program delivered? Three training courses were organized in each of the three weapons, in each continental zone: Europe, Americas and Asia. Africa’s situation is particular, as it has it’s own specific school in Dakar, where students have never fenced before and therefore need a much lengthier training. The program is specialised as most coaches in the world only teach one weapon (specialization), even in the biggest fencing countries The program’s duration is optimized: A duration of 1-2 months is acceptable in order to obtain a solid qualification and an FIE diploma in one weapon. The program was taught using qualitative and in-depth pedagogy and methodology. A unique course content, including subjects and methodology, is established, and at the end of the study period, candidates must take an exam in front of a jury, in order to obtain their FIE diploma. This program’s objective is to train and qualify students for a profession and not to merely update or upgrade their knowledge, which only requires a course of a shorter duration ( 7-10 days). The training experts who supervise the technical teaching of this program have been chosen from among the very best in the world. CONCLUSION These courses have been very successful; bothaccording to the total number of participants, and to the number of federations which sent candidates (see the figures in the following pages).

At the end of their training, each participant took an exam in front of a jury panel who evaluated them according to a unique grid and scoring system assessing the following criteria: footwork, technique, rhythm, lesson content, explanation, demonstration and correction, oral expression, timing and duration, and creativity. Following the successful evaluation by the jury panel, the candidates received their FIE diploma in the corresponding weapon.
