  1. Bell Work 8/29 Give me 3 characteristics of yourself that make you a living creature. 3 things that make me living are…

  2. Collect Today The Martian and the Car Assigned Levels of Organization Circles Late Lab Safety One Pager (-30%)

  3. Test 1 Tomorrow! Lab Safety Scientific Method- Know the steps in order! Characteristics of Life Levels of organization- Know them in order!

  4. Page 4: Characteristics of Life

  5. Standard B.10C – Analyze the levels of organization in biological systems and relate the levels to each other and to the whole system Essential Question How do the levels of organization show an increase in complexity?

  6. The Study of Life Introduction to Biology Bios = "life" Biology Logos = "study of"

  7. The Characteristics of Life • Cells – the smallest unit of organisms that carry on the functions life. • Made of one or more cells – unicellular or multicellular

  8. Displays Organization - cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism

  9. Growth – increase insize, adding cells and new structuresDevelopment – Natural changes that occur during growth

  10. Reproduction – organisms produce new individuals

  11. Responds to stimuli Stimulus – anything that an organism responds to, either internal or external environment Response – the reactionof an organism to a stimulus (critical to survival)

  12. Requires energy - to fuel their life functions. They get their energy from food or they use light energy to make their food

  13. Maintains Homeostasis – The regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain life.

  14. Thought question: Let’s list all the characteristics of life that fire possesses.

  15. If Transformers were real, would they be considered alive? Why or why not?

  16. If vampires were real, would they be considered living?

  17. Zombies are often referred to as the “living dead”. If they were real, would they be considered alive? Why or why not?

  18. CUPS Put the cups in order from smallest to largest

  19. Levels of Organization

  20. Atom- Smallest object that retains the properties of an element Ex: Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen Atoms held together by a chemical bond makes up a Molecule

  21. Molecules together will form organelles And a group of organelles will make up a….. cell

  22. Multicellular Organization Similar cells work together to form Tissues. Lots of Muscle cells together… muscle tissue Muscle Cell

  23. Multicellular Organization Different tissueswork together to form organs.

  24. Multicellular Organization Different Organs work together to form organ Systems. The heart is an organ made of cardiac muscle tissue… when the heart works with the arteries and veins it creates the circulatory system

  25. Multicellular Organization All the Organ Systems work together to form a living Organism.

  26. A.  Levels of Biological Organization • Organism – a living thing made up of one or more cells. • Unicellular– an organism composed of onecell, can carry on all the activities necessary for life • Multicellular– An organism composed of many cells, different cells carry out differentjobs (division of labor),

  27. Levels of organization in multicellular organism
