Funding • Funding support comes from donations to the University and is administered through the VCAA office • The UIS Research Board reviews the applications and recommends funding of projects up to a maximum of $5,000
Purpose • Scholarly Growth of Faculty • Disciplinary & creative activities that keep faculty members abreast of developments in relevant fields of knowledge • Development of new areas of scholarly competence needed within the campus • Generates knowledge to inform public policy
Purpose • Scholarly Growth of Students • Supports faculty-led research and creative activity involving students • Must focus on students’ scholarly development and participation in discipline level inquiry, and • Must foster their achievement of levels of competence in particular discipline areas
Summer Grants are Ideal for: • Projects already underway that you could complete with concentrated time and attention in the summer • Research that you typically cannot do during the regular school year
Submission Process • All grant proposals must be submitted to the Dean of the College • Dean will forward proposals to the Grants, Contracts, and Research Administration office • Dean will rank the proposals and include a letter of support for each grant that is forwarded for consideration
Proposals Must Include • Guidelines posted under “Faculty” tab at http://www.uis.edu/academicaffairs/ • Basic Information • Project title • Name of faculty member • Faculty member’s college • Contact information • Date of submission
Proposals Must Include Project Description (3 – 5 pages in length) • Description of project & its relationship to literature in the field • Statement of need or description of the problem • Objectives and goals (distinguish between summer and longer-term) • Explain how project fits overall research and/or scholarship agenda and how award advances agenda at this point • Involvement of students (if applicable) • Identification of anticipated outcomes (journal article, curriculum materials, etc.) • Discussion of probability of subsequent external funding to continue or expand project • Listing of previous NIAs and/or campus support received for research during past 4 years & progress
Proposals Must Include • Detailed Budget • Up to $5,000 • Contractual • Student support base rate of $8.25 per hour • Higher rate must be justified – may require department/college approval • Travel • must be itemized & based on current state rates (check OBFS travel section – http://www.obfs.uillinis.edu/) • Commodities or supplies • Detailed with costs identified • Stipend • Cannot exceed the hourly rate for researcher’s salary • Cannot be duplicative of stipend or salary already being earned for same period of time • Equipment • Itemized list with accurate prices
Proposals Must Include • Research references (if applicable) • A two-page vita • List recent publications & activities most relevant to the proposed project
Submission Requirements • Submit an electronic copy (preferred) or a hard copy of the proposal to your Dean • Electronic submissions • Must be sent as a single document in an email attachment (Word or PDF) to your Dean
Research Board • Composed of individuals from various disciplines • Present information in terms understandable by colleagues from other disciplines • Do not assume Research Board is familiar with your scholarly history • Document your scholarly history
Timeline • Submission deadline to Dean • March 22, 2013 by 5:00 pm • Dean submission deadline to Research Board • April 5, 2013 • Notification of awards • April 26, 2013 • Funds must be spent by • August 16, 2013 • Final report to Research Board • September 6, 2013
