  6. The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. They lie about 500 km east of the southern coast of Argentina. The 12,000 km2 archipelago includes East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. The two main islands of the archipelago are separated by Falkland Bay. The total length of the coast is estimated at 1300 km. The capital is Stanley on East Falkland. The islands have around 3500 inhabitants. The main economic activities include fishing, tourism and sheep farming. The islands are predominantly mountainous and hilly with a maximum height of 700 m. The only exception is the lowlands of Lafonia on the peninsula forming the southern part of East Falkland. The climate of the islands is cold, windy and humid. The islands are practically treeless. They have a wind-resistant vegetation consisting mainly of various dwarf shrubs. Las Islas Malvinas son un archipiélago en el Océano Atlántico. Se encuentran a unos 500 km al este de la costa sur de Argentina. El archipiélago de 12.000 km2 incluye East Falkland, West Falkland y 776 islas más pequeñas. Las dos islas principales del archipiélago están separadas por Falkland Bay. La longitud total de la costa se estima en 1300 km. La capital es Stanley en East Falkland. Las islas tienen alrededor de 3500 habitantes. Las principales actividades económicas incluyen la pesca, el turismo y la ganadería ovina. Las islas son predominantemente montañosas con una altura máxima de 700 m. La única excepción son las tierras bajas de Lafonia en la península que forma la parte sur de East Falkland. Celková dĺžka pobrežia sa odhaduje na 1300 km. Hlavným mestom je Stanley na Východnom Falklande. Ostrovy majú okolo 3500 obyvateľov. Medzi hlavné ekonomické aktivity patrí rybolov, cestovný ruch a chov oviec. Ostrovy sú prevažne hornaté a kopcovité s maximálnou výškou 700 m. Výnimkou sú len nížiny Lafonia na polostrove tvoriacom južnú časť Východného Falklandu. Podnebie ostrovov je chladné, veterné a vlhké. Ostrovy sú prakticky bez stromov. Majú vegetáciu odolnú voči vetru, ktorá pozostáva prevažne z rôznych trpasličích kríkov.
