P: Yes, his kingdom is filled with fairness and mercy, peace and love. L:Today Jesus rides into Jerusalem a hero.
P: Later he is called a criminal and killed. L: Holy God, help us to walk with him this difficult week. P: May we experience what he experienced:
joy, fear, pain, love, and resurrection. L: Let us meet our God and king this day with hope and joy.
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.1 Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; Through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang;
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.1 To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to His breast, The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.2 From Olivet they followed ‘mid an exultant crowd, The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud;
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.2 The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, Nor scorned that little children should on His bidding wait.
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.3 “Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing, For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King.
*HYMN #89“Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” v.3 O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice, And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice.
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Glorious God, on this day we love to shout “Hosanna” and wave palm branches. Yahoo!
And yet at the same time we remember the times we lift our voices to praise you, then turn around and speak cruelly to someone else.
We joyfully tell you how amazing you are and then yell at another of your children. We give thanks to you for blessing us with so much, but then we withhold our
blessings from others who need it. Your Word tells us this is not what your kingdom is, O God. Forgive us, and help us to live our praise by treating others
with your love and compassion. We pray this for the sake of Christ’s present and coming kingdom. Amen.
ASSURANCEOF PARDON L: Friends, hear the Good News: In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we learn that God’s love has no bounds.
In Christ we are forgiven, and are empowered to begin anew. Friends, believe the Good News of the Gospel. P: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen.
CHOIR ANTHEM “Beautiful One” ~T . Hughes Solo – Beth Resch
PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 118:1-2,19-29
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’ Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks tothe Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord; the righteousness shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of thealtar.
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 21:1-11
When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethpage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediatelyyou will find adonkey tied,
and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ This took place to fulfill what had beenspoken throughthe prophet,
saying, ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they broughtthe donkey and the colt,
and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that wentahead of him andthat followed
were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil,asking, ‘Who isthis?’
The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’ L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
