“Emerging” national economies are countries in the “South,” which have often high rates of economic growth, as measured by capitalist indexes. All the emerging economies accounted for 30 % of the world’s GDP, and 50 % if measured by “purchasing-power parity”. They exported 45 % of the world total; consumed over 50 % of the world’s energy; and had 75 % of global foreign-exchange reserves.
