Course Proposals for AGHS Math Department Margie DiPasqua
Topics in Calculus and Statistics • 12th grade class • Prerequisite of either • Passing grade in Trig/Precalc Principles • C or better in Trig/Precalc Standards
Rationale • Aimed towards students who are not intending on a math related major in college, but still want to gain a mathematical background • Provide foundation for students who would need to take an entry level Calculus or Statistics class in college
Rationale • Currently students with these grades only qualify to take Math Applications and Concepts in 12th grade • Course not challenging enough for these students • Too much diversity in class • Students who have 3 years of supplanted math up to students who took Algebra 1 in 8th grade • Offers alternative for students who do not qualify for Calculus Principles but would not be challenged in Math Application and Concepts
Rationale • This course would replace Calculus Applications • There was not enough content for a entire year in this course without going beyond a introductory Calculus class
Course Content • Precalculus Review • Functions, Graphs, & Limits • Differentiation • Applications of the Derivative • Introduction to Statistics • Descriptive Statistics • Probability • Probability Distributions • Confidence Intervals
Funding • Funding will be needed to purchase more textbooks
AP Calculus BC • 12th Grade Class • Prerequisite: B or better in AP Calculus AB • This course will run for the first time in the 2015 – 2016 school year
Rationale • Discussed in Math Task force • This course is designed for students who take Algebra 1 in 7th grade, and stay in the Honors/AP track throughout their high school careers • Currently, these students only have the option of AP Calculus AB in 11th grade and AP Statistics in 12th grade, or vice versa • AP Calculus BC will allow students to continue the Algebra based math sequence
Course Content • Limits and Their Properties • Differentiation • Applications of Differentiation • Integration • Logarithmic, Exponential, and Transcendental Functions • Differential Equations • Applications of Integration • Integration Techniques, L’Hopital’s Rule, Improper Integrals • Infinite Series • Conics, Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates • Vectors and Geometry of Space • Vector – Valued Function’s • Review for AP Test
Funding • Funding will be needed to purchase new textbooks
