  3. What does it mean to be brave? • To be courageous • To stand up for others • To go against social pressure to do what is right

  4. Cyberbullying? What is it? • The use of digital media tools such as the Internet & cell phones to deliberately upset or harass another person

  5. How can you show bravery if someone is being cyberbullied & you are a witness? • Standing up for the target • Empathizing with the target • Getting help from a trusted adult

  6. Vocabulary someone who sees cyberbullying happening, but does nothing to help Bystander: upstander: someonewho helps when they see cyberbullying occur empathize: to imagine the feelings that someone else is experiencing

  7. An upstander… • is not directly involved in the cyberbullying incident, but steps in to help anyway. • empathizes with the targets of cyberbullying, letting them know that they care and are listening. • does not spread rumors or go along with cyberbullies because of peer pressure, and may even tell the cyberbully to stop. • encourages the target to tell a trusted adult about the situation.

  8. Create a Cyberbullying Map • Why Care? Student Handout • Read story about Kevin & Jose • Use drawing paper & markers to create a map showing all the players in this event (bully/bullies, target, bystanders) • May show a labeled web, use concentric circles, or draw something more representational

  9. Cyberbullying: Be Upstanding Kevin sends his friend José a short video he made at home, a reenactment of a famous fantasy movie scene. José, laughing at how Kevin looks, shows it to some other boys at school. The boys laugh at Kevin too, and then decide to post it on a video-sharing website. Millions of people then view Kevin’s video. Nasty comments are posted. Every day, Kevin goes online to check the site and sees more comments like “idiot” and “fat nerd.” Every day, he goes to school and hears similar cruel comments from his classmates.

  10. Who is doing the cyberbullying? • Your opinion? • Is it only Jose? • What about the boys who helped uploaded the video? • What about people who posted nasty comments? • What about people who viewed the video?

  11. Who are the bystanders? • The students at school who witnessed the abuse and kids online who viewed the video

  12. What would you do if you were a bystander? • Consider: • Empathizing w/Kevin • Tell others to take down video • Write comments saying Kevin did not want the video up • Encourage Kevin to tell a trusted adult

  13. What would you say to Jose if you wanted him to stop? • Possibilities are: • Unfair to put up video w/out Kevin’s permission • Let him know how hurtful it is to Kevin • May not work, but it is an attempt

  14. What would you say to Kevin or do for him to show support? • Important to: • Listen to Kevin • Empathize with Kevin • Discuss with Kevin what actions to take

  15. What could you say to other kids who viewed & left cruel comments about the video? • Let them know they are followers • Tell them how Kevin feels

  16. How could you have involved a trusted adult? • Consider what the consequences of telling an adult for Kevin could be. • Others might make fun of him • Kevin needs to confide in someone who is trustworthy & has the skill & authority to help

  17. Some thoughts… • Those who posted cruel comments just as guilty of being bullies as the boys who uploaded video • Trusted adults, help? How? • School counselor? • Tech teacher? Possible to remove video? • Principal enforce school bullying rules

Wrap UP • What kinds of online behaviors could be considered cyberbullying? • What does it mean to be a bystander to cyberbullying? • Posting someone else’s video w/out permission, • leaving cruel comments on a website • Sees it but does nothing • Might get involved in the bullying • Spread the disaster further by recruiting more bystanders

Wrap Up • What are some things a bystander can do to become an upstander? • Show understanding & support for the target • Don’t react to the bully • Tell the bully to stop • Ask a trusted adult for help • Trusted adult is someone who you believe will listen & has the skills, desire, & authority to help
