  2. Characteristics • Similarities in embryonic development: • Radial cleavage • Indeterminate cleavage • Blastopore becomes the anus • Pharyngeal slits

  3. Echinoderms: Spiny-skinned animals • Sea lilies, feather stars, sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, sea daisies • Endoskeleton covered by a thin epidermis • Water vascular system • Radial symmetry • All are marine

  4. Chordates • Tunicates, Lancelets, and vertebrates • Four characteristics: • Notochord • Dorsal tubular nerve cord • Pharyngeal slits • Postanal tail

  5. Agnatha – lampreys & hagfish

  6. Cartilagenous fish – Sharks, skates, & rays

  7. Bony Fish – most fish are in this group

  8. Frogs – have smoother skin than Toads

  9. Salamanders & Newts

  10. Caecilian

  11. Modern Reptiles

  12. Birds

  13. Along came mammals: Monotremes lay eggs

  14. Marsupials: Pouched Mammals

  15. Placental Mammals
