Calcium Channel Blockers… • Calcium Channel Blockers relax coronary and peripheral arterioles. Also prevent coronary artery spasm. • Decreases cardiac contractility, dilates peripheral vessels so that the heart is working against less pressure, thereby decreasing the workload and oxygen demand of the heart. • Treats stable and variable angina, hypertension, dysrhythmias.
Blocking Calcium- • Calcium is responsible for activating heart muscle contraction. Blocking it blocks contraction; a relaxing effect. • Blocking Calcium Action In the Heart leads to Peripheral Vasodilation & Decreased workload of the Heart
Calcium Channel Blockers Include: • Common Calcium Channel Blockers Include Diltiazem (Cardizem), Verapamil (Calan), and amlodipine (Norvasc) • Remember all Calcium Channel Blockers with D.A.V. (Disabled American Veteran) F.I.N.N.N. (Like Fish Fin). • Diltiazem, Amlodipine, Verapamil • Felodipine, Isradipine, Nicardipine, Nifedipine, Nisoldipine.
Diltiazem (Cardizem) • The Cardizem is a big give-away that this pill is for your heart. • Diltiazem (or Dilateazem) dilates coronary and peripheral vessels. • This dilation treats Angina (Heart Pain), arrhythmias, and hypertension. This dilation & relaxation can cause (Side Effects): Congestive Heart Failure & Peripheral Edema Dilatation Splashes Water Peripherally and In The Heart, Causing Congestive (fluid congestion) Heart Failure & Peripheral Edema.
Verapamil (Calan) • Verapamil (Calan) can Calam (Calm) your high blood pressure. • Indicated for hypertension, angina, vasospasm, arrhythmias. Blocks Calcium From Entering Heart Cells to Stimulate Contraction. BLOCKS CALCIUM FROM THE HEART (Calcium Channel Blocker)
Verapamil (Calan), the Calcium Channel Blocker: This can Calam (Calm) vascular headaches, HTN, arrhythmia, etc. Side Effects May Include: Arrhythmias, CHF, Bradycardia, Peripheral Edema. Effects decreased with calcium & vitamin D supplements.
